UK magazine AutoExpress compares the new BMW 6 Series Convertible against the Jaguar XK. Here is an excerpt from their review:

“To see if it does, we’ve brought the new entry-level 6-Series to meet a long-standing class favourite. The V8-engined Jaguar XK is understudy to the mighty XKR, but with 380bhp on tap, it’s far from underpowered.

At £69,950, it sits between the £65,695 640i SE and £73,430 650i SE. So can the Brit brute justify its running costs with a better all-round package? Or has it met its match in the clever six-cylinder BMW?”

The conclusion:

“We didn’t expect to make such a head vs heart decision when picking a winner here. On paper, it’s difficult to see how the BMW could lose, given its sheer mechanical brilliance. And we are pleased to report that it doesn’t disappoint in the real world – it can turn its hand to driving at high speeds on a track or ambling along in traffic, and does both with ease. Yet it was the more raucous V8 Jag that left us fighting for the keys. In spite of its faults, the XK still has immense character and charm, with an engine that makes your heart rate rise nearly as quickly as the fuel gauge falls. However, jump back into the more polished 6-Series, and the Brit starts to feel a bit one-dimensional. Yes, its performance is immense, but the Jag simply isn’t as practical, advanced or accurate as its less expensive opponent. Ultimately, it hands victory to the BMW.”

    ponme un serie 6

  • Bmw4life

BOOM another W for BMW. 650i would make that thing look like a fisher price toy. Jaguar…. LOL more like Jokeuar.

  • Giom

Interesting, a UK magazine giving the win to BMW.

I must admit, tho, I get what they mean by head vs heart, although, both of mine are with the 6!

  • Guest25

It’s really hard to compare cars from different generations, of course BMW would win.

Decide at least – is BMW 6-series a competitor to Mercedes CL, or to Jaguar XK? It’s not the same class God damn it!

    • MathewBMW

CL is considered a S Coupé, Mercedes should have changed it’s name, like they did with the CLK, now E Coupé. So, BMW 8-Series (which is a 7-Series Coupé) is the probable competitor, isn’t it?

Thinking in that way, 6-Series is a 5-Series Coupé, so competes with E Coupé. And the future BMW Gran Coupé with the Mercedes CLS.

    Why didn’t they compare a V8 powered 6-Series?

The BMW 650i, with the TwinPower Turbo 4.4 V8 with 407 PS and 600 Nm, will destroy this Jaguar, even with this new 5.0 V8 with 385 PS and 515 Nm. More torque, 8-speed transmission (Jag has a 6-speed), even more weight, but it’s still faster:

    BMW 650i Convertible (F13) — 0-100km/h in 5.0 s;
    Jaguar XK 5.0L V8 — 0-100km/h in 5.6 s.

    • Otto

Because both competitors have to match in price, bunny.
      Jaguar XKR 0-100 kph : 4.8s
      Jaguar XKR-S 0-1100 kph 4.4s

      • MathewBMW

Sorry, Mr. Otto. I agree with you about the price, as a matter of fact, it’s said above. But I was questioning when they mention Jag’s power superior than 640i, when the true competitor is 650i.

And talking about the special one’s… XKR has a supercharged 5.0 V8 with 510 PS and 625 Nm, and the ugliest Jag ever, the XKR-S 550 PS and 680 Nm. So it’s BMW M6 territory here, isn’t it? The M6 will have similar power and torque, but, fortunately, BMW develops better dynamics, better transmission and better engine, so we can wait for a 4.0 s to reach 100km/h.

BMW= Boring and lacking in personality like all of the posters here: Souless and dull. How can this ugly monster of a car even compare to the beauty and integrity of the Jaguar. 407bhp this, 520 nm,that, it’s all boring stats from the Boring BMW brigade – bet you even compare the specs of washing machines and dishwashers….. Sad really

    • MathewBMW

In my humble opinion, the 6-Series is better in every way. I think it won the comparison because of that as well.

You don’t buy a car because of it’s specs only, that’s your point and it’s true. But you can’t buy a car looking only for “beauty, passion, integrity”.

Besides, I don’t like Jaguar’s XK look. I had the opportunity to see one 2010 XKR and I didn’t like the interior quality and the exterior is too weird. My humble opinion.

“bet you even compare the specs of washing machines and dishwashers….. Sad really”. I’ll tell you what is sad. Access a BMW Blog and criticize BMW fans because their lack of personality. Why are you here then? Do you expect that we share the same WISE opinion as yours?

    • MathewBMW

Plus, General, you must criticize some car reviews on YouTube, for instance. They analize skidpads, 0-100 kph, slalom…

Shame on you to humiliate a person just because he said about specs of cars. I always try to be polite in my comments. How about you? You also should start doing that. Educate yourself.

      I’ll flag your comment.

Read the latest Autocar review…. The Jaguar is simply a better, more rounded car even if your precious stats don’t stack The fact is that humans don’t operate in binnary 111000 1100 0010 1100 11. Last BMW Six that I rode in rattled like crazy and spent more time at the dealer than in the hands of the owner. That’s the price to pay for chasing and becoming a volume manufacturer…. sad but true – all BMW have to hide behind is stats. Buying a car is an emotive experience for true enthusiasts and sadly BMW have lost this:. Now the original 5 Series – that was something special!

        • Giom

So, you like the Jag more… big deal. We like the Six more… don’t you get it? There isn’t a right and a wrong… a better or worse… There is your taste and mine. Lets celebrate choice and lay off with the ‘Mine is better than yours’ crap. This is a grown up world… try and fit in!
