In the latest issue of Car and Driver, the popular U.S. magazine had the opportunity to test drive the new BMW 1 Series M Coupe. To make the drive even more interesting, they decided to place the 1M against Audi’s TT RS and the Infiniti IPL G37. The chosen place? The famous Tail of the Dragon roadway in Great Smoky Mountains.

The 1M ran 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and magazine declares the 1M as “the clear winner”. In straight-line though, the Audi TT RS reported an impressive number: 3.6 seconds to get to 60 mph.

The attributes of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe are being laid out by C&D: “fantastic brakes, balanced handling, perfect stance”. Furthermore, they make a reference to the wide fenders we came to love: “…the absurd and kind of awesome fender flares…”

Car and Driver: BMW 1M ranks higher than Inifiniti IPL G37 and Audi TT RSAnd the following phrase proves to us that we made the right choice by ordering an 1M this summer:

“The 1M’s super-quick steering(2.2 turns lock-to-lock) combined with a short wheelbase, makes it feel like the go-kart of the group, despite its upright, relatively tall seating position. The 1M certainly requires more skill to drive quickly than the Audi but is ultimately better-balanced machine. Its grip is stunning.”

Even the N54 gets praised.

“We were comforted by this N54′s flexibility, though, which provides a driver with more gear-selection options than a peaky engine would. You can take most of the Tail of the Dragon in third gear, never bothering with the short-throw shifter, you’ll power out of corners with gusto.”

I’m heading out to the store right now to pick this issue up! The thought of carving through the Tail of the Dragon in a new 1M puts a huge smile on my face! Great job BMW M!

I think it comes out this week, I couldn’t take the scans and post them here, unethical.

Be careful, scanning the entire entire from the magazine is a huge copyright issue. This is why we only showed the cover and gave a few quotes.

thanks Horatiu, but IEDEI is a non-profit blog…they want it down, I will take it down—-also, sir, the BMW 1M is not faster in any way than the RS in the article…i think your headline is a bit deceiving! :)

        • http://www.bmwblog.com Horatiu B.

Fixed the title! You’re right! I wrote it before I saw the 3.6 seconds for TT RS.

          I know it’s a non-profit :) I was just trying to protect you. We’ve been there.

        • Iedeiblog

thanks…you might be right….but is there a difference between putting up a couple pages vs. all the pages vs. one page? am mulling whether i should take it down…..cheers

Ehh…leave it now. The reason why we didn’t put up the other pages was due to the fact the magazine has not yet hit the shelves and wanted to protect their revenue. I know how it is to invest money in photoshoots and test drives.

Correction. The 1M was faster from a rolling start, 5-60mph, according to C&D. I think that’s pretty significant.

          • Iedeiblog

you are correct, but in everything else the RS pretty much takes it….including lap time…

          • wazon8

Not everything. TT RS didn’t take advantage in average slalom speed and skid pad, which make 1M the better handling car. Pretty enough for me to go for 1M.

          • Alex D.

Actually it doesn’t, look at the breakdown, the 1M won in every comparison.

          • Iedeiblog

i’m not sure what you mean? in most perfornance figures, the RS won….if you’re talking about the ratings, i see them a bit skeptically…i mean they said the TT-RS is too loud??? really? not sure why that would be a negative..also a “rebate” on the 1M? as far as i know, there is no rebate on the 1M….deducting points for lack of backseat room in a sports car?

Don’t get me wrong…i LOVE the 1M, but i think the TT-RS was given a bit of an unfair shake in the points tally….

            Thanks M.

I don’t think it really matters anyway, this car, as you know better than all, it’s all about handing, dynamics and driving experience. The “pure” M and that’s why I chose it myself also.

          • Alex D.

Still have to acknowledge that Audi came a long way with their TT RS. The car is clearly a strong contender and fast. M remains M and BMW will most likely always have that extra flavor.

        • Otto

What kind of fuel did they use?!
Audi claims 4.6s for the 0-62 mph.
3.6s is what it takes for a Porsche 911 Turbo.
          Clearly a typo.

This shows once again that BMW hit the jackpot with the 1M. Yes, it doesn’t have an NA engine, yes, it’s somewhat of an 1M with lots of M3 in it, but the car is nonetheless a real M.

As Horatiu said, this is not about horsepower and 0 to 60, this is about handling and joy of driving, and I have no doubt the 1M will become a classic.

So Audi TT RS uses a DCT that won’t be available in the US? What a shame!

But still, 3.6 seconds is impressive.

  • shark 28-28

there is somthing wrong about the article that shows the audi tt rs v.5 twin turbo charge with 344 horsepower that sprints from 0-60 mph = 3.6 it impossible from this car to make 3.6 from 0- 60 mph many thanks
