Super Bowl XLV event is over and while everyone talks about the Green Bay Packers win or the little mixup in the national anthem by Christina Aguillera, we will focus on the automotive angle of one of the most popular TV events of the year.

By our count, there were exactly 18 car commercials this year with most of them being delivered by Chevy and Hyundai. After a ten year absence, BMW ran two ads at the 2011 Super Bowl. First one was labeled Defying Logic and it showcases the new BMW X3 and the company as a significant contributor to the economy and a vital part of the American automobile manufacturing industry. It was filmed in BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina. Instead of actors, real-life BMW associates and citizens of the local community, including the Spartanburg High School football team, are featured in the commercial.

Volkswagen Darth Vader Commercial

Second one, and our favorite, BMW Advanced Diesel. The ad, set to David Bowie’s iconic melody “Changes,” depicts a truck driver bellowing black smoke, an older-model diesel vehicle sputtering up a hill, and pedestrians surrounded by clouds of filthy exhaust. In the spot, the BMW 3 Series Advanced Diesel makes a grand entrance highlighting its smooth, clean, efficient performance and powers away leaving them all in its dust.

60 millions later and many wonder if the return on investment will be what BMW expected after its 10 year return. Time will tell, but initially rankings and Twitter chatter, give the Advanced Diesel ad thumbs up.

Below we compiled a list of the car ads ran last night during the Super Bowl and we will let you vote on the best car commercial at Super Bowl XLV.

What about the Audi A8 commercials, particularly the “Jailbreak”. That was really funny.

Oop, sorry. Didn’t see it, being disguised as “superbowl commercial Kenny G”…

I could never like Audi’s ads, they always insult other car makers to be seen as “good”. That’s just inferiority.

        • AKSHAT

THATS CORRECT ‘COZ ,WHEN THEY WERE SAYING “GOODNIGHT”,
          THEY ALSO SAID TO MERC.

I like both the BMW commercials. Both were BMW style, tasteful and to the point. I was laughing when the trucker exhaled the smoke, it was unexpected lol!

By far the most enjoyable was the VW commercial with the kid dressed as Darth Vader because many can relate at that age wanting to dress as Vader….and the father pushing the auto-start….classic! I loved it.

But overall the morality of conservation and sustainability which BMW portrayed takes the cake. They are issues everyone on this planet must address together.

personally, i think mercedes’ commercial was the best out of the three top germans. BMW second and audi, i guess third even though they sucked royally haha. love the route mercedes took and loveddddd the diesel performance of BMWs

Audi is at their best again…still trying to exceed BMW and MBENZ, while BMW and MBENZ only have themselves to compete with. That totally shows how good BMW and MBENZ are. They are at their own stardom while Audi is still looking up and trying to take a bite

I think Audi has made great strides in recent years and is a big threat to BMW and Mercedes. I wouldn’t mind owning an Audi product in a few years.

Love to see VW winning the poll on the site. This shows that our readers can be objective and acknowledge the success of other automakers.
