In 2012, BMW will begin refreshing the 1 Series line-up. First model to receive a complete overhaul is the hatchback variant. Due to be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the new generation 1 Series hatchback is built under the codename F20, and will feature a slightly longer wheelbase and wider track than the current model.

It will be available in three and five door variants with both models using the new modular/expendable platform.

The backbone of these models was designed especially for this purpose so every model can have a variation backbone, simply be moving suspension points and firewalls to areas that will benefit each vehicle. Corroborated with more parts sharing, this new approach will allow BMW to reduce even more the production costs.

The car is expected to have a more aggressive look, fitted to the 1 Series bodystyle.

Inside, the car will inherit some cues from the 5 Series, but also some design structure from the upcoming 6 Series.

New three and four turbo engines will be used across the 1 Series models. At the high-end of the line-up, the 135i will be using the N55 Twin-Scroll engine.

The folks over at AutoWeek.nl captured a 1 Series test mule going around the famous Nurburgring track.

    The 1 here looks good. Let’s hope they make a good looking car…

    Let’s hope it looks better than the existing/outgoing model. Audi A3 is a stunner in comparison in that segment.

      A3 is just a VW Golf, it looks boring with extensive front overhang that makes it look like a penguine. The new A3 also looks girly with overdone headlights.

      The 1 Series hatch with a sports package is the best looking hatch in my opinion. The A3 is a non-premium product trying to be premium and compete with BMW. A3’s lack of quality and style can also be seen in its interior with extensive use of cheap plastics from VW products like the Golf and Polo. The poor driving dynamics and the terrible feel of front wheel drive means that only those who know little about cars or cannot afford a BMW would settle for this VW Golf with 4 rings, trying to be premium

    Good to see a further positive use of the 5Gt design

    @FreudeKing

    I agree. A3 is a very good car but it doesn’t give me any emotion.
    As a previous owner of a 1 series, I can admit that I never drove something similar in that segment.
    Now driving a Golf, the same of A3… FWD is something bad, feeling the gear changes of DSG when in a corner…
    I love free front wheels…

    It looks interesting, but bmw should improve interior.
