A recent report showed BMW X1 topping the Audi Q5 as best selling premium SUV in the European market. With the launch of the X1, BMW has opened a new premium small SUV segment. First rivals are scheduled to appear in 2011 when Audi will unveil their Q3 model, followed shortly by Saab and its 9-4x. The other premium automakers, Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti, are also expected to launch similar models in the near future.

To capitalize on the success of their entry-level Sports Activity Vehicle, BMW will introduce by the end of this year an M-Sport Package for the X1.

Ahead of its unveiling, spy photographer managed to capture some shots of an X1 test mule carrying the M-Sport Package. The package includes the usual aerodynamic kit and M-elements such as M-front and rear bumpers, M Sport Wheels, M-suspension, M-steering wheel and other M-branded interior components.

The car spotted this time sports the Space Grey color with 18″ M-wheels. An additional multi-spoke 17″ wheel will also be offered.

The M-Sport kit will also be available in time for the US market launch of the X1 next Summer.

In the U.S., BMW is expected to initially launch two models, X1 xDrvei28i and the twin-scroll turbocharged xDrvei35i.

This little X1 turned out to be on of my fav BMWs. Everytime I see one, it feels like an occasion. All other cars seem to fade in comparison with it’s uniquness.

Now, with this M package, it should multiply all of the above:)

I still think the car is ugly especially from the front, a face lift won’t do, it needs a mask! Hopefully the sports package will make it look more acceptable. But from what I see, the failure parts of the front design (bumper) includes where the grills are and surrounding – which doesn;t seem to be changing, what a shame. Those thick toenail like eyelids are disguisting!

  • Wooo hoo.

Oh lookie, the ‘affordable’ X vehicle has it’s very owm M-optics package. How cute.

BMW is going ‘downmarket’. I kind of like it when BMWs were not affordable to the ‘average’ person.

Exclusivity and brand image sure is taking a beating by lowering the price to join the club.

I don’t know where you are living, but this BMW is in the price range of the 3 Series, so what are you talking about?

OOh, its nice – i like the X1. But i dont know. Making every model an M version is kinda… I dont like it!
The idea of M is fading out now…. They will soon start makin Mini M’s…
When it was M3 and M5… that was a dream, now its becoming a standart. I dont like this

Plus, i really dont like this possible filing between the numbers, with new models… BMW 2, BMW 4, BMW …… who knows what….

    • FreudeKing

It is not really an M it is a sports package to make you car sportier!
