Next generation BMW 3 Series is due out in 2012. Built on a new modular platform, the F30 3er models, returns to the “slimmer look”, dynamic lines with squat proportions and short rear overhangs.

The typical proportions of a 3 Series remain, but the exterior design is more toned and muscular, bringing some the aggressiveness and design lines seen in the recent models, including the F10 5 Series.

BMW is getting back to basics with clean uncluttered shapes, plus lower and wider kidney grille openings. The sedan model has a longer wheelbase, at least 1.5″ longer than the current generation. The F30 will sport a “pushing nose”, somewhat similar to the E89 Z4 front-end.

The hood design will also most likely mimic one found in the Z4 and the new 5 Series, with more aggressive, but still fluent design lines. The rear flanks from the taillights towards the rear door, are left with a subtle line that links to the shape of the lights and the bootlid sculpture.

Convex and concave lines will be also incorporated in the side design.

The taillights maintain the typical L-shape design that wrap around the corners. The expected range of powerplants includes 6-cylinder engines, complemented by a new range of 4-cylinder engines and possibly even a 3-cylinder variant for Europe.

The super sporty M3 will feature an six-cylinder engine as well.

With two years before its unveiling and with first test mules already spotted during test trials, rendering artists have begun to draw out the new 3 Series.

    looks outdated.

agreed, this rendering is terrible. From a design aspect (and believe me, I study transportation design) this rendering is going backwards in styling. I can assure you the 3er will look nothing like this.

If you notice, the new 6 series shows the grille lower than 1/3 of the headlights, using the turn signal separation line as a guide for the bending of the bars. This rendering does not show any of the elements seen in the soon-to be 6 series. It takes the grille from the current 3 series and pastes 5-series gt lights on. Really it is an odd obsession, for several rendering artists to continually just paste the 5gt headlights on the current cars and call it an acceptable rendering.

this one doesnt mimic one found in the Z4…and yeah, looks more like E 90 FL. Sad

only jon sibal in my opinion does a good job making renderings which looks accurate.

This, obviously won’t even come close. Dont know why they even have the guts to release them when all it does is make them look st*pd

    Sucks. Waste of bandwidth.

I think it looks good. It would look great with black kidney grilles and different wheels. This is the first time I’ve heard that the M3 will be using a six-cylinder and not an eight-cylinder engine. BMW always seems to pull something out of its sleeve with the M3 so my expectations will remain high.

  6. Andrew says:

Is it just me or does this look identical to the E90 mock-ups prior to it’s debut?

  7. Auday says:

I think it looks good. I like the headlights and how the front is lower and sharper. I have the feeling that we would look back at this rendering when the car is released and sigh…

  8. Giom says:

Its not bad for a render, but I do expect a lil more from the side graphics. If you look at the X3, there’s a lot of interesting lines and curves… expect more of the same with the upcoming three.

I’m looking forward to the new three! It’s gonna be a stunner!

bmw really needs to get this car right. needs to be lighter, same size as the last – cause is just getting to big people – and the styling needs to be exciting, specially since jaguar is planning a 3 ser rival and coming from the XK and the new big gat xF it will be stunning. The current generation of 3 ser is the only one i never owned cause that back, the weight and the cramped interior- the passenger unit where the steering and glove box are is just so massive that the car felt claustrophobic – really put me off trading my E46 320d for it.

  10. Artmic says:

I hope the new 3 won’t be like the rendering, i expect something that looks less than some Pontiac.

  11. Greg says:

Well so far I say that one looks the best out of all I’ve seen. Most of them are just photoshopped E90s with the F10 headlights haha. I can say this looks pretty good.
