One of the most attractive 5 Series models for the UK market is the new 2011 520d. Powered by a four diesel turbocharged engine, the new 184hp BMW 520d delivers class-leading emission levels of 129g/km of CO2 as well as a combined fuel consumption of 48 MPG(US).

It achieves this through a combination of lightweight engineering (aluminum crankcase), the latest generation of common-rail direct fuel injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, mated to its four-cylinder engine. Eight-speed automatic gearbox is available on the 520d – the first time a four-cylinder powered vehicle has featured such an advanced transmission.

The BMW 520d Sedan is expected to be the highest selling model with around 60 per cent of the total volume.

Good car, will definitely sell in great numbers.

As for the pictures, this is exactly what I am talking about: the colour is as dull and boring as ever. BMW is advertising their car in a dull, dark, boring colour while the E Class from Merc is white, bright silver and shiny in all their adverts.

Also, look at that first photo. The 5 is no beauty. The bottom airdam is so wide and looks so fake that it reminds me of a clown’s mouth drawn wide. The nose (grille) lacks aggressiveness and integration, it is a swollen thing.

    • BENZ

As long as there are Mercedes-Benz E200 CDI and E220 CDI, the 520d will always stay in dealerships for months.

      • FreudeKing

Let’s see how BMW’s sales of the 5 will beat the E.

        • Simba

@BENZ – instead of worrying about BMW’s 5 Series beating the E Class, I think you should worry about Merc trying to defend their second place because Audi is so going to kick benz to third in this coming quater. Don’t cry then when not enough “aged” people buy the E to help Merc maintain their runner up position (first loser).

          • BENZ

bmw and audi are cheap shit. Mercedes-Benz is prestige. Only an idiot would say that bmw and audi are better by selling USD30000 cars vs at least USD50000 sold by Mercedes-Benz. So they are in different leagues. As I said:
            1. Mercedes-Benz – PRESTIGE
            2. bmw – MEDIOCRE
            3. audi – like bmw.

          • FreudeKing

Prestige what? BMW is the most valued and admired brand out of the three. You ned something to back up prestige and Merc has only its history to support that prestige that you are talking about. BMW currently has quality, exclusivity, reliability, performance and most of all recognition for the superior products that they produce.

Sorry to say but most of us and most of the customers in the premium segment are not from the past and what we see is now and the future. Merc’s >150 years past is irrelevant to us.

I have never said that Audi was better than Merc. But for a VW to beat a so called more pretige, pure brand like Merc is a slap on your brand’s face. Besides, why am I even trying to explain to you why BMW is better??? This fact is so embedded that it is not worth debating. It is like you trying to argue that the A Class mommy car is sportier than the 1 Series Coupe. Only people like you would think the A Class represents pretige.

        • BENZ

Let’s see. Here are the July 2010 sales numbers. Mercedes-Benz sold 19200 units of the E-Class sedans. How many 5 series did your mediocre bmw sell? They didn’t even publish the numbers in order not to demonstrate their humiliation. 19200 is the number of 5 series sold in about 3 months. Like I said soon the 5 series will be discontinued. This is how Mercedes-Benz humiliates bmw. The same refers to the S-Class vs the 7 Series. People bought 5500 units of S-Class. I highly suspect that so many people bought 7 series.

          • FreudeKing

Why am I even wasting mytime with you. You onlyhave the Merc numbers and no BMW numbers at all. You shouold loook at both and not just think 5500 is many by your own standards. For your record, BMW is the market leader in the 7 Series segment. So there you have it, you suspision is wrong and the 7 almost tripled S’s figures in recent months.

Also the 5GT is trashing the R Class, X5 treashing the boring M Class, no need to mention what the X3 will do to the GLK and the X1 alone outsells the GLK almost twofolds.

Furthermore, although the 5 is not fully out (apparently), they are almost on par with the E numbers. The 1 Series exceed the sales of the mommy cars A and B class together. Did I mention Rolls Royce sales beats teh Maybach more than 100 times and the Mini puts the Smart to shame iito sales numbers.

So don’t come talk about high volume in upper market models with me. There is a reason why Merc is barely hanging onto second place let alone trying to compete with BMW.

Also sorry to burst your bubble but the 5 will not soon be discontinued. It has decades of history and is one of the very profitable high volume cars from BMW. Furthermore, how can you discontinue a benchmark? I drove past an E Class today and hell was that thing wierd and ugly (esp looking from theback). It was like the result of a messed up plastic surgery. Even Korean cars look better than that. I guess that’s what oldies do to themselves, they try to fake their youth.

Just took delivery of the 2010 new 520d Se with the sport auto box. The transmission has completely failed and is unable to select a gear, tow truck on the way to collect. Has any body else encountered this ?

    • BENZ

Sell that crappy 5 series and buy Mercedes-Benz E200 CDI instead. You’ll feel status immediately.

      • FreudeKing

Sorry but most people will immediately feel 20 years older than they actually are when they climb into the E Class. Also, interior of the E is disguisting, like the interior decorations of an old age home, whereas BMW’s inteior is like an art gallery, full of quality, class and style – for the young stylish, successful professionals who have bright and vibrant careers ahead of them.

        • BENZ

That’s why monthly sales figures of the E-Class equals to the 3 months sales figures of your idiotic 5 series. By the way, the young now choose the E-Class over the crappy 5 series.

          • FreudeKing

BMW’s 5 was only fully out in the market in June, so before you compare, let’s see what the next three months hold.

          • FreudeKing

Just to add, most people that I see driving the E Class are old men or hotel drivers. So maybe you are right, young people like drivers are forced to drive for their companies in these terrible E Classes.

  • http://www.sundaybuy.com/ BMW DVD

Agree…but more youn men will run into it no matter what problem they will met,it is BMW,not others, that’s it!

    • BENZ

Sound people will never choose 5 series when there’s E-CLASS.

  • Garry

    Hi Benz and Freudeking.

By looking at your comments, both have their excellency. BMW is performance based Cars and Merc is Prestige Cars. so.. i would prefer Merc rather than BMW. Just like Merx built Bus, Lorry, trucks. What about BMW? Motorbike……hihi. Merc has 125 years of tradition. What about BMW? These can show the actual facts…

    • FreudeKing

So you think a brand with a longer histeory is definitely better than others. So in your mind, Ford is the longest standing car company, so it must be better than the Benz. Can you see how ridiculous your argument is???

Furthermore, BMW builds one of the most premium motorbike on this planet. Merc builts commercial lorries and trucks that run around industrial areas and mines. So what is that suppose to say? Need I remind you that BMW was also involved with building aircraft engines and had very strong ties with Rolls Royce aircraft engine manufacturer.

The point is that Merc is lacking behind and is only number 2 at the moment. As for your comfort assumption, I think you should go and test drive thenew 7 and 5 Series becasue not only are they more comfortable than the Mercs (as tested and awarded to BMW), they are very satisfying driving machine as well. So it doesn’t seem like Merc has any value left. However, I must admit that there will always be demand for the mommy’s taxi – being the A and B Class because BMW will not setp so low to produce such cars.

At least BMW is not making a car for the mothers to drive their kids to school with like the A and B Class. You drive your merc and I will stick with my BMW. But don’t cry when heads turn for the 1 series Coupe and not for your E Class (or whatever you drive).

BTW, just so that you know, telling people that you drive a Mercedes is becoming like telling people you drive a Volvo.
