A latest report from Autocar, quoting BMW sales and marketing boss Ian Robertson, focuses on the possible variants of the upcoming Megacity electric car due out in 2013.
Speaking to Autocar, Robertson said that the company’s Megacity won’t be restricted to “just one format” and the radical Vision ED sports car concept shown last year at the Frankfurt show, shows the possibility of a pure electric sports car, even if a final production version would be different.
The Megacity line-up will represent BMW’s first mass produced electric cars and confirmed again, it will certainly wear a BMW badge.
“We’re in the final stages of picking a name,” he said, “but we want it to become a strong sub-brand like we have with M.”
Furthermore, BMW has high expectations for the new electric family and with its goals of heavily reducing weight, an electric sports car is definitely an achievable target. The Megacity vehicle will be built primarily from carbon fiber that saves 30 percent mass weight over the an equivalent aluminum car.
Robertson also confirmed that the Megacity Vehicle would have high equipment levels, plus many extra features will be able to be added by dealers and possibly even buyers themselves.
The first Megacity concept will be unveiled sometimes in 2011.
