With an exclusive Design Night on the evening of the first press day at Auto China in Beijing, BMW introduced a new concept: BMW Gran Coupe, an elegant 4-door vehicle with striking dynamic proportions and resembling the CS Concept.
The concept study on display symbolizes the new design direction for BMW with lots of elements seen in the recent new models or concepts. The BMW Concept Gran Coupe concentrates the fundamental values of the brand, including the famous Hofmeister Kink and kidney grille. Furthermore, the Gran Coupe inspiration came from classic BMWs, like the 3.0 Csi.
As with the Concept CS 2007, BMW reveals a of 4-door coupe type of vehicle with a distinctive sporty character. This very same model constitutes a preview of the upcoming, redesigned 6 Series and the Munich-based automaker confirmed that some of the design elements from the Gran Coupe Concept will transpose in the 6er Coupe and Convertible.
Despite the initial rumors, the car will most likely not going to be marketed as an 8 Series, but rather being part of the 6 Series group, 6 GT is one name that comes to mind.
The production ready model will be launched in 2012 and the Gran Coupe Concept will make its European debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall. Underneath it will use the same ‘backbone’ platform that underpins the current 5-series, 7-series and 5 GT. The car will offer the same mix of six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as those cars, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
