With an exclusive Design Night on the evening of the first press day at Auto China in Beijing, BMW introduced a new concept: BMW Gran Coupe, an elegant 4-door vehicle with striking dynamic proportions and resembling the CS Concept.

The concept study on display symbolizes the new design direction for BMW with lots of elements seen in the recent new models or concepts. The BMW Concept Gran Coupe concentrates the fundamental values of the brand, including the famous Hofmeister Kink and kidney grille. Furthermore, the Gran Coupe inspiration came from classic BMWs, like the 3.0 Csi.

As with the Concept CS 2007, BMW reveals a of 4-door coupe type of vehicle with a distinctive sporty character. This very same model constitutes a preview of the upcoming, redesigned 6 Series and the Munich-based automaker confirmed that some of the design elements from the Gran Coupe Concept will transpose in the 6er Coupe and Convertible.

Despite the initial rumors, the car will most likely not going to be marketed as an 8 Series, but rather being part of the 6 Series group, 6 GT is one name that comes to mind.

The production ready model will be launched in 2012 and the Gran Coupe Concept will make its European debut at the Paris Motor Show this fall. Underneath it will use the same ‘backbone’ platform that underpins the current 5-series, 7-series and 5 GT. The car will offer the same mix of six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as those cars, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The wheel arches could use a hint more aggression.

  • viper

    • Beach

Everybody remember to vote thumbs down!

  • Omar

Add more of the new Z4’s front end style to it, make the roof line more coupe like and u have a winner…

  • bmwm6

it looks like it can compete with the 5 series

imagine an M version of this

  • Dennis

For the first time since the 3 series e92/3? coupe, this bmw looks even better. Period.

  • MM

Maybe a hint to the new 6-series….?

  • Auday

I like the front, kinda bringing back the aggressive style of the late 70s, the Passat looking back is a bit weird for a BMW, and I wish that they kept the aggressive side styling of the CS.
After all why not the CS itself? almost everyone loved that car and it was probably the only design that got the new era, the Bangle era, and the old school guys all agreeing on it. I say make the CS.

Concept Grand Coupe? Let’s be honest, this will be the new 4 door 6er.

  • efoza

Good to see the success of the 5GT being used on other coming models. I hear that there is now also going to be a 7GT which would be great.

I predict that the next 10 years BMW’s success in the premmium sector is going to be around its GT range rather than its standard every day cars.

    • BOB-the-builder

No BMW does not need to make a million random models. They should just concentrate on making the current ones really good, however i do like the look of this car alot and think they should make it.

  • Bryce

This ‘concept’ looks production ready. There’s nothing about it that would prevent it from being put directly into production, unlike the CS Concept and the Vision Concept.

  • Beach

So, this presages the styling of the 6-series, so it should look great. Hopefully the 2 door will still have the (CS) kink in the rear beltline.
