The UK journalists are i-Motor spent some time behind the wheel of the somewhat controversial BMW 5 Series GT. One of those cars that don’t photograph well, but tend to stand out when seen in person, the 5 GT is being said to have already exceeded BMW’s sales expectations.

Launched last year, the BMW 5 Series GT, short for Gran Turismo, is based on the platform of the new BMW 7 Series and was built on the same principle that made the original Gran Turismo vehicles so popular: a high-performance luxury automobile designed for long-distance driving and why not, having some fun while at it.

“Is it an SUV? A Wagon?” Same very questions many of us have asked, but truth is that the 5 GT opens a new niche market that is slowly starting to welcome new players from BMW’s competition.

The first car to be built by BMW from inside-out, the 5 GT is not only an imposing and unique vehicle – okay..some may say odd -but also sets new standards of interior design luxury in the BMW line-up.

Let’s have a look at i-Motor’s review.

Haha, very clever video review. Still the styling is a bit weird.

Good review. Aren’t those who are likely to buy the GT looking less for sharp handling and more for cloud like comfort? When BMW make a car designed to be spacious and comfortable at the expense of some driving dynamics they receive mixed reviews, yet this is expected and accepted of Mercedes.

    • Efozab says:

What has Mercedes got to do with it? Don’t forget Merc is now rushing to come up with its own GT to keep up with BMW.

      • viper says:

Just making the comparison that mb are expected to make floaty supremely comfortable cars and bmw sharp handling but with firmer suspension.

    looks like a prius

Interesting review, but this whole ‘It’s a confused car’ thing is getting so old. Does ppl think they get extra marks when they add that to a review? Great car!

    • Jordan says:

haha exactly… the confused car line is quite old.

it’s actually quite the opposite… it’s a car that knows EXACTLY what it does and does it extremely well. it’s very specific built where as a “car” fits a very wide market. so using those facts, I believe the car would be the “confused” vehicle.

  5. Efozab says:

This is a dream car and that is why some refer to it as a “confused car”. Just like the X5 when it first came out, there were mixed reviews but then ….. well the rest can be read in its success story. The GT is the same. It has become one of those success stories which many thought would be too much to label another winner from BMW.

All I can say is that the GT is not a confused car but is an all new experience. Given that Benz, Audi and now lexus are all planning to enter its market, lets see how this GT story settles in a few years time. In the meantime, BMW GT is the best BMW to drive and be driven in if you are looking for comfort and enough speed to keep ahead of all else.

I am so in love with the 5 GT! Has anyone driven it? care to share some views? I am waiting for the xDrive version to come out ^_^

    • BMWM6 says:

I have driven the 5gt for around 3 days. its very comfortable but its not what your going to expect. well it might be.

how do you view the 5gt I view it as a CUV i know it isn’t but thats how I see it. So compared to a CUV it drives much better. but its nothing like a sedan.

personally I wasnt interested in the 5gt ( dont let me bring you down) simply because the x5m has been blinding me lately

      • Eggiloo says:

Thanks for sharing your experience! I am actually just planning ahead on replacing my CUV! Personally, I love sedans but I just can’t ignore how practical some SUVs are. I know that wagons someitmes give even more cargo room…but I also like the elevated view from a CUV…
somehow, to me, it seems that the 5GT is like the solution to my conflicting wants! xD

I am collecting my new GT on the 28th of this month. Having read the various comments made by all, I can simply say that the reason for me buying this car is because of its abbility to differentiate between a need and a dream…it is absolutely brilliant.
