“Is it an SUV? A Wagon? Or about a hatchback?”

This very same phrase we’ve been hearing ever since the first rumors of a new BMW surfaced three years ago, but BMW surprised the automotive market with the introduction of a new niche model, a vehicle that, as InsideLine, mentions in their video review, it is hard to fit into a category.

Sure, it might not fit the bill of a true Gran Turismo, but it sure left a good impression on many people that have seen it or driven it.

Based on the platform of the new BMW 7 Series, the 5 Series GT was built on the same principle that made the original Gran Turismo vehicles so popular: a high-performance luxury automobile designed for long-distance driving and why not, having some fun while at it.

The model tested by InsideLine is the high-end 550i GT powered by a 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 engine, as seen in the 750i. The powerplant produces 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. All this power is sent to the rear wheels through the new ZF 8-Speed automatic transmission.

Let’s have a look:

  • Lol

Ugly turbo automatic. Designed for these modern BMW buyers. (Racial comment removed). Plus whats with all the ugly lens flares on the photo, cheap optics?

  • wow

Well, as I know the 5-series GT is sold all over the world, and even some swedes are buing it :-) ….and about the photo (lens) optic: It´s something that happens if you take a picture against the sunlight. Reflections in the lens. A little artistic feeling of the seventies….the 40+ -buyer gets a nostalgic feeling of his/her childhood…and buys the car!

I am a regular BMW blog visitor, and these last days i noticed a commenter named “Lol” who in my opinion souldn’t be allowed to post comments here anymore.

I Know you guys are busy, so maybe your comments rating system will do the job.

I personaly don’t like the 5GT at all but i think you can express your hate for the car without insulting a whole race.

Thank you, we removed the racial comment. We’re trying to moderate as fast as possible an hoping one day everyone will understand the value of showing respect to the other peers.

      • :p

        I Doubt that will happend

  • Giom

Horatiu, do you have info on GT sales figures and if it sells as expected. I know it’s very early for that as the car is not available globaly yet, but just out of curiocity.

Nice video tho. I’m impressed by the slalom results in Sport+. Don’t forget, this is a big heavy car.

  • Nizer

This car makes little sense for me. The only reason I drive a car this big is so that I can put a dog in the back while traveling, which you can’t do with this car. Well, maybe you could but PETA might go a little nuts. All of my other cargo needs can be handled with a normal trunk and roof racks. In my book this is just a big car that’s not really very functional.
