Newest and most interesting rumor of the days revolves around the BMW Sauber Formula 1 team. According to Auto123 and Auto Motor und Sport, McLaren is looking into the idea of splitting completely with Mercedes as soon as the Formula 1 season ends.To take this rumor even further, AMS reports that McLaren’s plan to buy the Formula One engine division from BMW.

As you recall, BMW will exit the Formula 1 championship at the end of this year and a new buyer for the Sauber team has been found.

The move would also clear path for Mercedes to focus on its elaborate partnership with Brawn, the leading team this season.  McLaren has an engine supply contract with equity partner Mercedes for two more seasons, but the Chairman Ron Dennis believes the car can manage without the Mercedes’ engines.

Rumor: McLaren to split with Mercedes and buy BMWs F1 engine division?Auto Motor und Sport said BMW would be interested in selling its F1 engine program for the right price and contacts might have already been established.

A very interesting rumor and if it turns out to be true, we can’t only be happy to see the BMW engines continuing in the Formula 1 races.

On a different note, BMW Sauber driver, Rober Kubica, is still weighing his options for the next season. While many people see him joining Renault next year, the Japanese team Toyota  showed interest in his skills as well. Kubica is being reluctant to make a choice since both teams’ future is up for debate.

That’s a really nice article; they don’t skimp on the engineering. An interesting quote from autocar, that the world would never see the likes again; top gear just asserted the same thing about the veyron, 15 years later.

Did McLaren make money on the F1, or are they losing $2m per car like VW/bugatti?

could happen, with all these rumors about brawn as the new sliver arrows for 2010, BUT the one thing that is strange about it and makes me doubt it is – that Mercedes owns 40% or more of McLaren, this is to big of a share to easily buy back for Ron Dennis and makes me think that things will stay the way they are…

I think this will happen. Its been rumored for a long time that McLaren has been looking for a way out of its ties with Mercedes as, in recent years, the relationship between the two manufacturers has become strained. Especially after the failure of the SLR to really capture attention from performance junkies.

That said, look at the earth-shattering experience that came from the previous McLaren-BMW project. Makes me wonder – how can they do that with the upcoming McLaren MP4/12C is supposed to be powered by a turbocharged Mercedes V8?
