The magic number is ~ 200kw – giiven about 1.34hp per 1 kw the 3 cylinder will be right at 130 kw (given a ’safe’ 150/170 hp rating). Think of the 3 cylinder as half an N55 engine with about 75kw of electrical motivation. Assume an automatic with a compact electric motor in the tranny.

There’ll be some need for balance shafts in the engine but a 3 cylinder with a three plane (120 degree separation) crank will not be too thrashy or noisy.

So somewhere between 150 and 200kw they’ll have a car that exceeds known emissions requirements, sips fuel, recharges itself, and has enough full-time useful power to be fun. A driver’s Prius, if you will. ; -)
