I agree that this is very high tech and first in the world in term of Hybrid achievements. But the main aims of this type of vehicles are: 1. Reduce fuel consumption (why? scarce resources and high energy prices) 2. Less emissions for environmental preservation. If I am a customer in this market, I'd look at how much I am going to be saving in terms of the reduced fuel consumption and compare it to the initial price tag I have to pay. (and it is a huge difference) Yes, there are other factors such as more power, etc. But if I am environmentally concious, I wouldn't be buying a V8 anyway, would I? Vice Versa, if I want power and performance, it is unlikely that I would be able to achieve much by adding a hybrid system to boost a few kw and t, why not just get pure power form the XM's? No person can tell me that they care about the environment and still purcase a V8 - Hybrid or not. Even though this is a hybrid, it is atill farting out lots of CO2 per km. So there is definitely quite a clear cut between the two types of customers, they are in fact almost mutually exclusive.

Let me give you an example. In the US, what are the main marketing messages with regards to encouraging diesel over petrol? (fuel costs, environment - exactly the same as the Hybrid that's coming out - that's what people care most) Why else do you think Europeans compare the fuel saving to the initial premium of a diesel car over a petrol? Another example: You have a choice to purchase a solar panel for your home. What are the things you need to consider before purchasing? Obviously how much cost saving would amount to and compare to the price of the solar panel. Hybrid cars are no different. I don't care whether the panels are using materials from the moon or the latest technology embeded inside the panel. Most consumers care about their pockets, including me. I am willing to pay a little more for environmental preservation. But don't charge me an initial premium of 100000 for a long term saving of 10000 and tell me that I am saving the rain forests and the ozone layer.

I believe that their reliability will be similar to other models'. I wasn't thinking about Hybrid in economical terms and wondering whether it would be cheaper to have it than - say - diesel. I just wonder what exactly BMW engineers did achieve. Lexus' announce that their hybrid can or will drive on electric engine for 20 min. BMW seems to achieve much more, you can drive their hybrid on electric mode in traffic without limits of time. Probably, this is most advance hybrid in history and it's really exciting in it. Add to this performance that will be better than 4.4 V8 and than any other hybrid on the market and things are going to be only more interesting. Agree, searching savings in it will be dramatic misunderstanding, but itwill fit well to eco-inclined people who got bored/disappointed by Lexus' hybrids. I assess that it's price gonna be close to price of M cars.

I suspect that all that could be saved using the Active Hybrid BMWs will be lost when you pay a heavy initial purchase price for the car. So is it really desirable for consumers? But this is definitely the right direction to go. Just hope that they are reliable... futhermore, how ill this affect the life span for these vehicles and ownership after motorplan? I cannot see these cars going for 20 years like current BMWs.

The wheels are definately terrible... makes the car look unattractive. All they had to do is make it chrome instead of this matt silver finish! This is afterall going to be a very expensive hybrid vehicle pointing to the future!!! Why do people at BMW not suggest things like these? This would have been a magnificent wheel if it was in chrome. I think the concept wheel is in chrome.

Thanks for details. This hybrid is really innovative. Energy regeneration works great, since it doesn't demand working of pertrol engine to charge betteries. Great achievement especially for emission free driving in traffic. Not mention about torgue of this engine, no wonder that BMW is planing to build sport car with similar technology. After all, it has 780Nm and most probalby sport car will have even more torgue. I wonder what excatly will be fuel consuption reduction in real world circumstances. You wrote that it's 20%, but it concerns situations when pethrol engine is working. However, in traffic up to 60km/h pethrol engine won't working, so it allow to avoid situation when consumption of fuel is highest - traffic jam. Can't wait on your raport about driving feelings. Do you have any infos when BMW will make their new hybrid avaible for journalist to test it?
