The engine will most likely be the 270hp 3.0 liter Direct Injection V6 with Dual Cam VVT. The same engine currently used in the base CTS, SRX and Lacrosse among others. Not a bad design. It makes 270 hp @ 7000 rpm and 223 lb-ft @ 5700 rpm. Despite the lofty torque peak, this is actually a very linear engine -- the torque curve shows 90% of the torque available from ~2400 rpm and up. 90 bhp/liter is very decent; especially so considering the fact that the engine runs on regular 87 octane. Performance should be very respectable if they can keep the vehicle reasonably light.

I've just now found this discussion...Frankly, GM would have a hard time making a car that was balanced, refined, and have the quality workmanship of BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Infiniti...The M5 is too much car and horrendously expensive, the CTS price and appeal was artificially raised to make it follow expensive company but it failed to garsp the market, becasue I see 10 M5s to one CTS. The M3 market space is even harder, and serioulsy, no car matches it. I will be in the market for such a car and I am eager to see what Cadillac offers.

The CTS (especially with the 300 HP engine and performance package,) is a fine vehicle, with very good handling and acceleration and a comfortable ride. I would definitely be interested in seeing how this ATS turns out, and might even consider it for a future vehicle, if I wasn't already boycotting Government Motors (they've already received enough of my money in the form of my tax dollars - they don't need to receive any more from me.)

You know, if you Google ATS, you get a website called Above Top Secret, a conspiracy wack job site populated by idiots. GM needs to research its names better. Just sayin'.

Thought the CTS was more aiming at the 5 series? Best of luck to the ATS, may it be luckier than the Caddy Catera - I believe that Opel Omega branded as a Caddilac was the last attempt at the 3 series.

Honestly, the CTS was already kinda-sorta competing against the BMW 3er.

The small-for-Cadillac CTS never quite fit into the German's neatly delineated class categories and yet we could argue that the standard six cylinder CTS operates in the near-luxury market.

The ATS will help solve this bit of confusion...hopefully...

2 things:
1) does this mean that the CTS is gone for good?
2) Shawn one think i learn is that u cant really coment on something that isn't out yet, i know BMW is awesome and for most of us, BMW cars are better than is actual Cadillac "counterparts", but really with the history we can predict that the ATS wont be better that the future 3 series, but we don't know what Cadillac is cooking, so we cant be completely sure.

Of course, I am a BMW afficionado - but frankly it is heresy to consider the new GM product as "competition" to the 3. We all know this, but it still bothers me at some level that the auto magazines and media say such things! Is this due too some kind of insecurity of my faith in BMW? Hardly, I just find it a little silly, even foolish to compare any "NEW GM" product to the caliber of BMW. Their new ATS will fall far short of the current 3 when it's released, but of greater relevence is the fact that by then the new gen 3 will be very close - and will positively decimate GMs attempt.

To GMs credit, at least they're finally aiming high! : )
