The BMW M5 needs no introduction anymore and everyone acknowledges that the M5 has been, as Mr. Clarkson says also, “the ultimate sport saloon”….well, sedan as we call it here in the U.S.

So, Top Gear decided to take the Ultimate Driving Machine, that being the M5 for those that were in doubt, against the the newly and somewhat highly praised Jaguar XFR. But before we jump into the 7 minutes or so video, let’s review the two cars from a technology standpoint.

BMW M5: powered by the amazing and soon phased out,  5.0 literV10 S85 engine which produces 500 horsepower and redlines at 8250 rpm. Torque? 384 lb-ft(520Nm). Top speed is limited at  155 mph(250km/h). Official numbers show 0-60 mph(0-100km/h) figures at around 4.5 seconds.

Jaguar XFR: powered by a direct-injected and supercharged  5.0 liter V8 engine outputting 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque.  Jaguar let the XFR loose with a top speed of 200 mph(320 km/h) – car tested by Top Gear stops at 155 mph. Official numbers say that the XFR runs from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

As usual, with his interesting humor, admired by many and disliked by others, Mr. Clarkson goes into a deeper comparison. Will the Jaguar XFR steal the “crown” from the M5? Well, let’s see the video.

P.S. Listen to the engines sound and you will see why we believe that V10 BMW engine is simply a state-of-art.

I just picked up a 2010 M5–and all I have to say pushing the M button and pressing the gas then fishtailing from the power–nothing compares–80 to 130 is like a flash–the M5 is not supposed to feel like your driving a mustang??? in my eyes there is no comparison!!!!

i really like the m5, yep look at my name tag… but honestly XFR is a very good car as well. If u wanna buy a jag, the only to pic is with a letter R, because they are astonishing, if its just a XF for example, no thank you. Anyways between these 2, i prefer M5

  3. Ezh says:

M5 has no torque at low rev. This completely sucks. Give it the new 4.4 biturbo from X6 M and more comfort in saloon.

    A M5 owner.

    • viper says:

ur right…if it had 600Nm instead of 530Nm it would be even better , I prefer more torque , its just more fun , anyway all that has changed with M Xs…..

  4. Mauro Corti says:

You’re right, I tried one some months ago and it has no torque at all @ low rev… can’t understand why so many bimmers like the aspirated engine, it has no torque at all at low rev…

  5. Seiz says:

I read in a magazine a comparison between the M5 , the “Jaaaag” , CLS AMG and the Cadillac CTS-V . All i heard was how bad the M5 is on a day to day basis due to the lack of torque . And i honestly agree . I used to have a Type-R with power but no torque , and now i have a diesel with lots and lots of torque . It’s more comfort . Most of the M5 users won’t take it on a weekly basis to the track , where it purely shines i guess ( just drove one once :( ) . So i guess that the next one with it’s new M turbo engine and the dynamics we are used to from BMW will blow the competition away . Can’t wait for it :D

  6. Joe says:

I own an M5 and honestly its the greatest car on earth hands down. There is no car more capable and engaging then the e60 M5. Its the perfect all around sports sedan … that Jag looks ok but will keep my real transmission and deal with the low torque until the new one comes out.. I think its going to be a monster.

  7. VASANTTES says:

    BMW dominate the wildest beasts….(jag)

  8. VicCreed says:

It could have a million horsepower and still be ugly.

  9. dmlgc says:

VicCreed – you must not be a car guy, anything with million horsepower is beautiful.

  10. Sreej says:

You guys are missing the point… Jag is not trying to compete with the M5 ..i they wanted to do that they would have tinkered around a lil more with the engine..taken out some of the plush bits, reduced a bit more weight and make it go around a track faster and stick its tongue out at the M5.. or it could carry someone in comfort and style and when the occasional M5 cock comes over and struts his stuff..stay rite by his side and not lose any composure in doing it.. u don’t have to beat him to earn his respect.. u just have to prove to him that u r just as fast when u need to be..Tell me how many of you are actually going to be taking ur M5 to a track and race with a Jag just to satisfy your ego?? As i see it the Jag is for people who don’t have anything to prove to anybody else and the M5 with its louder engine and fancy tricks is for guys who are trying to overcompensate for other things they lack…

  11. Anon says:

The XFR is brilliant, M5 is rubbish in comparision.
    I can’t want til I get myself a Jag.

  12. Brooks says:

There’s no question that the e60 is a love it or hate it affair. I’ve driven the daylights out of one and it’s truly an incredible car. Over techno, perhaps. Optional mechanized side bolster seats cheezy? Yes. Insane horsepower. Yup. Practical. Totally. Reliable. Yes. But expensive. Chris Bangles’ Body style – blah. I think that a better car is the e39 M5 for the money. Wnile just as fast off the line and up to about 60 MPH, it has the right blend of technology, BMW “M” pedigree and good old fashioned muscle car feel. That’s why it has such a cult following. So much so, that I was compelled to put the M5 Video guide together. In it I discuss at length these comparisons between the E60 and the E39. I invite you to check it out at

  14. there is no doubt that the M5 it’s much better!

  15. Babken says:

Some people talk ridiculous things. M5 doesn’t have torque? It has everything the KING needs. It will kill any saloon car on the track. It’s a DREAM. It’s the GODFATHER.

  16. e39 m5 says:

The m5 Kills it! Why are we even having this conversation? Jag lost its lustre in the 70’s and never got it back. Besides the BMW makes real horsepower, whereas the Jag has to fake it with a supercharger – no thanks.

  17. Saleem says:

Let us all wait and see this game is never over and there is no rest for the weary I want to see what the new M5 has to offer.

  18. M Hen says:

It amazes me that people continue to say one is better than the other. In my opinion, they are both beautiful automobiles and faster than almost any other sedan on the streets. I own a Jag. I love the handling and power. I look forward to getting this model soon. You have to admit, the Jag is a worthy opponent!

    God bless

  19. XF5 says:

Bmw M5 is no doubt a great car. But what’s the point of it being a sedan if its not that comfortable enough. Maybe Jaguar thought of this and offered the car with better comfort and better ride quality with similar performance. Hence its the best sports “sedan”. This v ery fact that it offers more comfort is the main factor of choosing this over any hardcore spine rattling ride a sports car offers. Like a 911.
