BMW North America issued a week ago a recall notice of the 2008 BMW 1 Series and 3 Series models to correct a possible side airbag problem. According to the recall notice, an incorrect crimp connectors may have been used on the side airbag and belt tensioner wiring.

The direct impact would be an insufficient contact area between the crimp connector and the corresponding plug.

This could lead to an increase in the electrical resistance of that connection and the side airbad might not deploy in case of an accident.

The recall doesn’t mention exactly which models are affected, but we can assume that all of the 1 and 3 Series models with production year 2008 are being affected. If you own one of these 1 and 3 Series cars, feel free to contact BMW North America at 1-800-831-1117

Potential Number of Units Affected: All

Summary:
BMW IS RECALLING MY 2008 1-SERIES AND 3- SERIES PASSENGER CARS. INCORRECT CRIMP CONNECTORS MAY HAVE BEEN USED ON THE SIDE AIR BAG AND BELT TENSIONER WIRING. AS A RESULT SUFFICIENT CONTACT BETWEEN THE CRIMP CONNECTORS AND THE CORRESPONDING PLUG MAY NOT OCCUR WHICH COULD LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN THE ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE OF THAT CONNECTION.

Consequence:
IF THAT HAPPENED, IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR THE SIDE AIR BAG AND/OR THE SAFETY BELT TENSIONER NOT TO DEPLOY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT AN OCCUPANT, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.

Remedy:
THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED THE AGENCY WITH A REMEDY OR NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

If I am correct, the 1 Series and 3 Series vehicles are made in Germany, South Africa and other parts of the world. Why is the recall only in America and not else where in the world… unless I am mistaken about this point. The same problem occurred with the occupancy detection matt in the 1 and 3 Series where only cars in America were recalled.

This is a huge safety issue and if there is a recall due to product or manufacturing defects, all cars around the world made with this defect should be recalled. Not just the ones in the countries where BMW is more likely to be sued by customers.

Depends on the batches and so on, but the website that issued this recall in an American firm, so do check with other related agencies in your region to see if one was issued like this.

Called BMW NA this morning. No recall on my ’08 E92. Rep indicated the recall is VIN-specific.

I wonder why they never recalled the issues (known) with the seat belt tensioners and wiring harnesses in the e36s and Z3s…

    • Lance

because it will cost them too much money and they are older cars, so why replace for the customers when they can fork out money to replace themselves… “bearing in mind that you can even profit from them due to your own manufacture defect”.

Wow. I wonder if anyone got hurt because of this before it got recalled. Yikes.
