Last week, the fellows at HighMotor had the opportunity to attend an exclusive presentation of the upcoming BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. The top model, BMW 550i GT was showcased during an event at the German Embassy in Madrid, Spain.
We’ve learned in the past that prior to the 5 GT hitting the dealerships’ showrooms, BMW will showcase the car at special preview events for future customers and companies interested in updating their car fleet.
To make the event even more interesting, BMW has also brought the designer of the 5 Series GT, Christoper Weil who gave a presentation on the development process. According to Weil, the 5 Series Gran Turismo development started three years ago and begins with a total of 6 teams submitting their sketches. Three of them are being chosen, but as one would expect, the decision is quite difficult, mostly because it requires to anticipate the car design trend in three years from that time.
From here, with the 3 sketches elected, BMW started to work on them separately. The first thing was to make a model made of a flexible material in order to redesign it in small details. At that moment, BMW has three models in three dimensions.
Later one of them is eliminated and work continues with the two finalists. Eventually the final design is chosen and a few production units are being built for the testing process.
Both the BMW X1 and the 5 Series GT will be officially launched at the Leipzig plant on June 23rd. In the U.S., the BMW 550i GT will be available in in the Fall and have the base price set between $65,000-$70,000.
Stay tuned for more updates in the next few weeks when we will have something special prepared for you.

That seems like a reasonable price. The 5GT is a car with great presence and elegance. I like it! But will this not steal ssales from the X5 and X6? I suppose it will steal from the Q7 and M Class as well. So BMW wins.
Lance: I don’t think this will take away sales from those, but I would love to here BMWBLOG’s opinion who the competitors of the 5er GT are
Can’t wait to see this car in person
