So what happens when a racing safety car gets in front of a BMW? Tricky question? No, not really, but I’m sure you’re wondering by now where I’m going with this. During the latest WTCC race in Pau, the Safety Car driver caused one of the ….let’s just say…..most ridiculous racing accidents we have seen.
Coming out of the pit and cutting in from of the race cars, the Safety Cars gets hit by a BMW 320si driven by Franz Engstler of Liqui Moly Team. Engstler, a private investor who puts all his money into racing, led the race, until this accident ocurred.
The debate on Youtube is whether the Safety Car driver came out and improperly maneuver his car or….should have the BMW driver slowed down more because of the yellow warning yellow. That’s probably irrelevant now and that’s not the scope of this article.

Just a follow up note regarding who was at fault, the FIA have announced that the safety car had NOT be authorised to go on track. Yellows were being waved, SC boards were out, but the Safety car had not recieved confirmation to deploy. The FIA are satisfied the Engstler had slowed into the corner as he should and was unable to avoid the collision. The French sporting authority is to investigate the safety car drivers as requested by the race stewards.
Shame for Englster, ruined a good result for him.
Reminds me of when Nick Heidfeld took the door off the medical car with his Sauber F1 car a few years back, YouTube “Nick Heidfeld hits safety car”.. that was close!
Ridiculous! Safety car driver is clearly at fault in this.
