In Germany, the EMS system includes special emergency doctors who respond to serious trauma or medical emergencies.

The responding emergency doctor, or "Notarzt" often drives separately from the ambulance crew, and has a special car, which is more powerful and maneuverable, since they won't be carrying a patient.

Porsche has designed a Cayenne for a similar application. I think the manufacturers do this the way Lambo builds "police cars" for the autostrade.

For a short description: http://www.anesthesia-analgesia.org/cgi/content/full/96/3/912

If you google "notarzt" you'll see lots of pics of more typical cars.

As a Paramedic, I can say that a powerful, sharp handling Ambulance will save lives.
This vehicle would be classified as an ERU "Emergency Response Vehicle" and while it would carry all EMS drugs and equipment, it would not be used for patient transport.
In my service we use Police Pack Chevrolet Tahoes for this purpose. They handle like dogs and are underpowered.
When a child is choking - I'd take the BMW.
