We haven’t really spoke about this subject before, but in the past months, there many rumors around a future MINI model. Developed under the name Speedster, it is targeted as being the fastest MINI’s two-seater drop-top.
MINI Speedster will be build on the Cooper Convertible platform, a common method these days in the BMW Group which helps minimize development costs by allowing components sharing.
The Speedster is said to have its own unique identity and becomes more of classic convertible rather than the typical MINI open-top. It is also a two-seater car, reminding us of the now defunct BMW Z3. The new concept will not lose some of the MINI distinctive elements, like the twin-central exhaust pipes or split front-grille.
Take this rumor with a grain of salt, but AutoExpress UK mentions the Speedster as being offered with a hardtop and soft-top design.
The Speedster opens the doors of a new market for MINI where the key player is the Mazda MX-5 and it’s scheduled to arrive in 2011.

Will it be introduced before, or after the Z2?
Yeah, it does overlap with the Z2. I never liked the boxy design of the mini, so this is cool to me, but many do, and that may erode the mini’s identity for them.
Love those X6 wheels. Hmm— what about a Mini SUV?
please…no. if this happens at least make it rwd. love the mini but cant stand fwd, especially in the S i cant engage the clutch without some front wheel spin.
Poverty car!

A memo within the company states that the MINI Speedster car body will be built by another outside contractor, but definitely not the Austrian company Magna who will be producing the MINI CrossOver.
