BMW-web.tv has just released a video of the BMW 7 Series test crash. For the first time, you can see the new BMW 7 Series being put through different accident scenarios.

You can see how the car responds to frontal and side impact, along with overturning.

But let’s let the specialists tell us more.

Interesting to hear about their criteria; for example, that the doors still be openable despite a serious front-end collision. Often that’s not the case, as the front will crush but the frame (including a/b pillars) will still flex to aborb the impact.

With the move to plastic bodypanels (etc), how much of the crash is actually aborbed by the panels, hood, and how much from the bumper and frame? Obviously these work in concert, but is a shift going on away from using panels to absorb energy?

I wish they had explained the overturn test in detail. that last shot is amazing.

I wish I could see the overturn test, I’d really like to see how the car can get that stress. Anyway it’s not included in the EURONCAP test so maybe it was just for their own curiosity
