With all media’s attention on the upcoming BMW X5 M, the facelifted version of the 2009 BMW X5 continues its testing in stealth mode…..ok, maybe not completely in stealth mode since the spy photographers managed to spotted again.

The facelift X5 is due to be released next year and it is a much needed upgrade for the SAV owners. Not as much as an exterior design refresh, but more of an engine upgrade. We expect the X5 to be powered by the award-winning 3.0 liter twin-turbo engine, a much needed upgrade from the current xDrive30i powered by a 3.0-liter inline-6 that produces 260 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque.

We also expect a hybrid version to be released by the end of this year, joining the X6 and 7 Series hybrid family.

As far as the exterior design upgrade, well, we know for sure that the more aggressive and sportier X6 front-end will be ported over to the its bigger brother, or..is is the smaller brother? Who knows anymore, that’s just another story.

As you can see in the photo comparison we have done, the large air intakes and front bumper are identical. We expect the X6 headlights to be used as well. Even though the X5 loses some of its identity, I totally dig it.

Is that image for real!? I’d think that the X5 wouldn’t just be a photo copy of the X6. The X6 must stand out.

To me, the X6 front end isn’t nesseseraly better on the X5 (although it is a beautifull design), I quite like the current X5 nose. It’s a little more subtle -wich I think it must be, and its got an identity of its own.

    Interesting move this…

As long as it isn’t the GT nose, I’m fine with it. Kinda looks like a fat e46 nose, which isn’t as bad as it sounds.

Expect to see a xdrive50i with the 4.4 Twin Turbo.

Saw a version of in Oberschleissheim the the other day, it had the same lights as the X6, they looked the same. The mule was not so disguised, just tape around the sites and the front nose.
Back had four exhausts on show, 2 either side. But when checked, 2 of the holes were blanked so was the standard 1 each side in reality

Wonder if the DPC system will be optional on X5 too?
