A couple of months back, we wrote a review on the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, one of BMW’s competitors in the luxury sedan segment.
The review focused mostly on the design language and engine offerings. Of course, our readers have mixed feelings and their comments reflected that. Many wonder how the new BMW 5 Series will measure against the E-Class W212.
Well, a couple of months later, due to the leaked photo of the allegedly 2010 BMW 5 Series, we can literally put these two vehicles, head-to-head.
As far as the engine goes, Mercedes-Benz E-Class will offer a variety of motor options, from the 4 and 6 cylinder ones to a powerful V8. The base petrol models is the E200 CGI which outputs 184hp and 270Nm, followed closely by the E250 CGI – 204hp and 310Nm. The petrol line-up is completed with the V6 E350 CGI – 292hp and 365 Nm – and the 5.5 liter V8 E500 producing 388hp and 530Nm.
The 2011 BMW 5 Series is rumored to start with the 523i – 177hp engine, followed by 525i with 218hp, 528i with 230hp, 530i 272hp, 535i twin-turbo 300hp.
The high-end 5 Series model, most likely the 550i, will be powered by a V8 engine outputting 362hp.
Design wise? Unfortunately, we don’t have any official photos of the 2011 BMW 5 Series, hence the “Silly comparison” title, but based on this, my initial reaction is that the next 5er will be way more aggressive and sportier looking than the W212 E-Class.
I wonder if the Avantgarde package on the E-class will close this gap……

I think the new 5 looks great, but I will reserver judgement until I will see the production model.
As far as MB, I dislike the headlights…
“The high-end 5 Series model, most likely the 550i, will be powered by a V8 engine outputting 362hp.”
Surely the upcoming 5 series will have the V8 TT ?
I like the current 5 series more than the E Class (design wise). I suspect the same goes for the next gen. I only concern is that the taillights will be too similar to he new 7er which to me is rather boring. I hope it does have some unique head/taillights and other unique desing elements.
Of course this voting is not absolutely objective, because there are many BMW fans on this blog. But in my opinion new fifth model looks great, slightly better then E class and much more better then previous generation of BMW 5
The E is actually a very decent car, but the LED worm at the bottom looks stupid. Based on the picture of the 5, which I think looks terribly ugly with that flat grille and wide straight airdam at the bottom,it won’t beat the Merc on design. Sorry but I don’t like th looks of the 5 in that picture, I’d rather stick with the current one. Actually the current one looks better than the new E
The MB has broken its own rules.Just look at the back lights.
In other mercedeses(every model of Mercedes) the back lights are like a triangle but the new E-class doesn’t have this.
mercedes is much better than bmw especialy e class.is faster, better looking and and extremely luxiourus.and mercedes s class is much better than 7 series
