A friend of mine just called about a diesel fueling problem with his new X5 diesel. He couldn't get the nozzle in past the stop. I have two VW diesels so he called the diesel guy, me.

VW doesn't have a system like this. I guess they figure that their customers who buy a diesel are smart enough to put diesel in it. So I Googled and found this site.

Not all stations that carry diesel in my area have the big nozzle. When I told him about what I found here he said that on Monday he's going back to his BMW dealership & having the damned thing removed. As Imants commented, even if you use the adapter it negates the nozzle auto shut-off. Seems pretty damned studid to me.

PS. It's Christmas Eve & no dealership is open to help my friend with his problem.

During my first month of ownership, my gas station nozzle for diesel worked fine in my X5, then would not work.??? Looked inside the neck and could see the two black plastic clips that hold the flat plate in place were not being disengaged by the nozzle, any longer. The bottom plastic clip appeared not in place. I reached into the neck and pushed down on the lower plastic clip and the plate opened, so I could then insert the nozzle. But pain in the ass, so contacted by BMW dealer who agreed neck should be replaced. Seems like a cheap piece of plastic can topple a $50,000 car. With all the electronics that work great, this is the only thing defective, but the most important since if you can't put fuel in your car, you don't need Navigation or music.

I have an X5 diesel and have so far only found 1 pump nozzle that works properly. I have to use the adapter in every case. The auto-shutoff of the pump does not work with the adapter, so I have spilled diesel onto the side of my vehicle twice now.

What a pain this is! I would likely have purchased something else had I known about it in advance.

@Lance: And that same sensor could probably double as a nuclear/biochemical attack detector.

Nice, but it is amazing how they call it a technology. It's just a design element. But not all coutries have different sizes necks for diesel and petrol. It would be an innovation to have a sensor to detect the type of fuel going in and deny access in that way - probably going to be too costly.

@Sam: :) Well, they assumed that BMW owners are smart enough to read the pump :)))

But...I can see how this could be a problem

Damn, when my 335d comes, I am going to make the dealer put the correct Fueling Protection system. Ya would have thought BMW would have put the correct protection system on to begin with. :)
