It's definitely in alignment with what some futurists were saying years ago about the population becoming good consumers rather than good citizens....or put another way good consumership is good citizenship. Corporations (such as BMW or Apple) use the digital world to create a linkage between virtual reality and reality itself. Our desires are channeled to want the product...to be constantly reminded of the object and more importantly to be eposed to the pervasive and constant image of a channeled and programmed desire. I'm betting that these syntheses of virtuality/desire/lifestyle will be successful to an extent- but that most of us will simply be cognitive discriminating users- picking and prioritizing what really matters in our lives.
