BMW CS is definitely that design that BMW should be heading into, but, I guess, they are too conservative in their designs. Exit Bangle, enter VAn Hooydonk, this should be the year that we should see some agressive designs by this talented designer, Van Hooydonk.

Someone said that a Maseratti would be the best choice, I agree, but it will also be way more expensive.

I also believe that sometimes in the future, the CS will be back, but it might have to bring something new to the table to compete to the already well-advanced high-end sedans.

I dont like the Panamera i dont think its good looking at all and for the CS i would have hoped it would have come out but it seems it will not.
I agree that it would have been a great sucses and there is no need for BMW now to make 100 models like Mercedes.Bmw is a premium carmaker not a Mazda to build minivans..

Great article!

It is a pitty these two sedans will never fight it out in the real world (hopefully GT5 will bring the CS Concept to cyber reality).

My nod goes to the CS, but I don't dislike the Porshe. It's bold and brutish, but not boring. I think in real life it will have presence and I bet it handles like a Porshe.

It's a pitty about the economic state -it really stuffs up exciting new cars. You year of still-born project all over the planet. But the economic crisis isn't the only worry, oil is running out too, and in my opinion this is a bigger inflouence in the demize of the CS. Or all of the above, but it is a sad state of affares!

The CS contributed a lot towards defining design trends that are already popping up in production models - Z4 is the most obvious example with it's CS inspired interior and exterior front treatment. But I do think that time has run out for the CS.

The present is such a different climate for designers that I'm sure that all the German automobile manufacturers are brainstorming and trying to suss out how new realities...hybridity, the pessimistic global economic crisis and the generational change of world leaders affects and set the emotional climate. These are exactly the kind of factors that can influence aesthetic shifts in all contemporary culture.

Do we get more conservatively designed cars from BMW....that would continue the trend of the last few years inspired by Adrian Van Hooydonk who is more of an advocate for evolutionary change or do the more adventurous Bangle-ites such as Anders Warming get the nod?

I'd say in a years time when new concepts are debuted we'll see what we're in for for the next cycle of design.
Me, I'd bet on the risk-takers for breaking with orthodoxy.

And as long as I'm gazing into the crystal ball, I think this is a moment when the design leadership from BMW could falter and one of the other German brands begin setting the pace.

Even though the CS Concept has been postponed, it's most definitely cancelled. By the time BMW lets the economy get at least half-way normal it'll be upgrade time and the concept will be useless unless used for updating the new concept.

The Panamera is a great step towards Aston Martin and Maserati and should do very well. It'd be cheaper than the Aston and maybe a couple grand more than the Maserati. It's a Porsche so would you choose a Porsche or a Maserati??

The CS would have been a wonderful car and a success, but the whimps in BMW postponed/cancelled it.
If it is ever revived, it might be too late as other brands would have moved well ahead.

I agree with rcm3 - the Panamera is horrible while the CS looks gorgeous. I think the Panamera has one of the worst interior layouts of any car I've seen in a while.

The CS concept is great looking and represents a viable direction for BMW flagship sedans. I hope to see it developed in the future. It certainly makes more sense for BMW than does SUVs, minivans, or the slew of other nonsense that comes from Munich from time to time.

The Porsche Panamera however makes less sense than a poopy-flavored lollipop (thanks Dodgeball & Rip Torn). What the hell is Porsche doing? Aren't they supposed to be a sports car company? An SUV is bad enough, but this new thing is absolutely hideous and designed with the utmost laziness. If their going to attempt to make a 'sedan', they should do more than add two doors. Front: Porsche. Back: Porsche. Side: WTF!!??
