@<a href="#comment-84588" rel="nofollow">jkp</a>:
I really like the plan to differentiate the hybrid's design. To me it gives the designers a green light for something totally different- a chance to work outside the prevailing visual dna of BMW design.
But, it could result in a BMW version of nerdyness ala Toyota's Prius....kidney grilles with pocket penholders.
We'll see...

Interesting, but I'm not sure why a putative 1-series hybrid would have to be in an "unconventional" body.

I think Scott is just relaying a lot of the ideas in the air rather than checking off a list of future models that are set in stone (X-series cabrio!).

When you compare VW's NA single digit sales drop last year to BMW's 20+% decline it has to point to, among other reasons, the increase in small car sales in the US.

If they can keep the price points on target and still make a great BMW...this is the segment I'd go if I were part of market planning.

And it's great to hear that the Z2 is a go.
I remember when the 1-series was announced a lot of chatter on the web dissed the small BMW as a market compromise and that it would water down the BMW brand. Sure hasn't turned out that way.
