In the past months I have received a lot of email regarding the new iDrive system and which BMW vehicles will have it implemented in the future. I have just learned that the BMW X5 and X6 will be receiving the new iDrive controller and the Drive logic including the hard drive and USB port.

Unfortunately, the navigation screen will not change.

The change will take place in September and it will be available on the 2010 models.

Back in August, we learned that the 2009 BMW 5 and 6 Series will not be arriving with the CIC (Car Infotainment Computer). But it has been confirmed today that in March the BMW 5 and 6 Series will get the new iDrive logic and hard drive, an addition to the new iDrive controller that has been added before.

BMW X5 and X6 to get the new iDrive System in September

I  hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip Irv!

This looks exactly as the one in the new z4! Does that mean the z4 will have this new iDrive AND CIC too?

  • Doug

Can they retrofit them to cars with the previous idrive?

@Doug: I don’t think so, at least that was the case with the previous models.

  • Jay

I just got on my car and my navi system isn’t working! wtf! screen went all red. This is on the new 2009 328i coupe only 2500 miles so far – UGHHHH!

  • Rob

What is meant by the “Unfortunately, the navigation screen will not change.” sentence? Do they mean the physical display will not be the higher resolution one that is part of the new iDrive (I doubt this as its part of the CIC package)? Or do they mean the software will somehow be the old interface running on the new CIC hardware (which I also doubt as the new software is also a key part of the CIC)?

Today, a dealer in Houston told me that the new iDrive is currently available on any X5 ordered now (for May production), but another dealer told me that it would not be aviable unil 2010 models arrive, sometime in September. Can you confirm which is accurate? I keep finding inconsistent information.

The dealer also said that the new system will have the controller and software, but not a new screen. This does not make any sense to me either (see Rob’s comment above). Does anyone know why this might be? Is it temporary? Or will the X5 get the new screen in 2010?

Same as here, Iam in kuwait and asked our dealer about the new CIC is it going to be available with 2010 models that will be released in september? he told me no he didnt think so, iam gonna buy the X5 2009 but i stopped because of the new CIC for 2010 model

  • Stig

Hmmm…. I bought an X6 50i in November. It had the old iDrive system of course. I was gutted to find out that they launched the CIC on all other models right after that.
However, the car just got stolen so now I will be getting a new one and am planning on getting a sep production one so I get the 2010 model. I have been told that it will have the CIC which is why I am a little disappointed seeing here that the screen won’t change. How accurate is this? I live in Sweden btw.

I am not sure that this is reliable information. The dealer who told me that the CIC would be on the 2009 (wrong) also told me that the screen would not change. I am resigned to waiting.

I just (10. June) ordered a BMW X5 2009. I should get it sometime the end of this month (July). Now I’m reading that on the web that the 2010 model will come in September and will have the new CIC iDrive. Did I make a mistake buying the 2009 model now?

Some people say that the 2009 models built after April ’09 will already have the CIC, is that true or do I really have to kick my a** for not waiting until September? As stated in this article the 2010 model will have the CIC knob but will still have the CCC system. I don’t care so much about the knob (I will use speech activation anyway) but about the higher resolution screen and the new UI of the system.

Can anyone shed some light on the X5 and CIC issue for me?

    Thanks so much,

    Kimba

Kimba, that’s exactly what we heard a few months ago that only the September built X5s will get the new, complete iDrive system.

    • Stig

In my opinion the speech activation is useless with the discbased system. Way to unresponsive and slow. Uncomparable to the CIC one. Sorry.

    Hi,

I am from Germany. According to my local BMW dealer our X5 35d order is on stand-by until August 2009 – by that date (at least here in Germany) it is possible to order the 2010 model including the new iDrive. Delivery for my new car will be end of October 2009. These information were confirmed by BMW Munich.

Thanks for the great blog, I love it!

  • Stig

As I said before I am waiting for a 2010 model as well for my X6. The last thing I was told by my dealer was that they wouldn´t put the new CIC in until oct production….
Will probably buy the 5 series GT instead and avoid the confusion.

  • Kimba

Ok, stupid question but I haven’t seen anything official from BMW yet that the CIC iDrive will be in the 2010 X5 and X6. Does anyone have a anything like a “Dealer Bulletin” or something like that? All the dealers I asked here in the US said they haven’t received anything from BMW yet. (One of them is a good buddy of mine)

Dang, I’m still pissed that I didn’t wait for the 2010 model if it is true that the CIC will be in the 2010 model.

      Kimba,

nothing official from BMW, but this is something I have learned from different sources….

For potential educated x5 buyers this issue is a tricky one, I’m also just holding off on my order but don’t know for how much longer. My Wife just wants the car but i’d love the new i-drive since i’t so close. So far I’m hearing Sept production but several reliable voices are saying Oct. ;(

I have been told by my dealer this morning the x6 gets it from the 7th oct build with a middle of november delivery.

  • chinese

    shit…….i think i will get the new X6 in sep…but…no no no…it’s Lies…the oct …or latset.

  • jerry

i just got word from my dealer that Nov production cars will have the latest iDrive. I’m interested, but have heard rumours of a facelift/new engine come next year – any info on that?

  • Stig

Well the hybrid version of the 50i is due for release soon.
