Statistical Analysis of the International Engine of the Year awards

Today, I decided to do something different here at BMWBlog. With the help of Gurgen, a reader of our blog, we have an interesting statistical analysis done based on the International Engine of the Year Awards held since 1999.

Judged by a panel of 65 renowned motoring journalists from 32 countries as disparate as the USA, Japan, China, Russia, New Zealand, India, Korea, Germany, France, Romania, South Africa, Mexico and the UK, the Awards highlight and acknowledge engine engineering excellence.

BMW has won several awards in the past few years, last one in May of this year, when the 3.0 liter twin-turbo engine has won the award, continuing the supremacy that started in 2007.

Since 1999, BMW has had 44 nominations for several categories, being the number one company based on nominations. Honda comes in second with 22 nominations throughout the years.

Also, BMW has won 6 International Engine of the Year awards, which accounts for 60% of the total awards, with Toyota coming in second, at 20% or 2 awards won.

But I will let you read the slides, I found them to be a great reference and a refresher when it comes to previous engines built, regardless if it was BMW, Honda or Mercedes.

It seems like when BMW was nominated, it often won. How does this relate to how often the BMW’s were nominated?

Because it has to be nominated to win, and isn’t necessarily considered every year, it makes me wonder how the nominations work. BMW makes great engines to be sure, but is BMW allowed to vet the competition before it happens?
