Juliane Blasi, 2009 BMW Z4′s exterior designer, has finally gone on camera and talked about the beautiful new Z4. As we mentioned previously, the new Z4 has been designed mostly by a team of talented women. We also see for the first time, Ms. Hilke Schaer, the person in charge of Color and Surface design of the new Z4.

It is quite fascinating to listen to them talking with so much passion about their work and they certainly seem proud of what they achieved. But enough with the chit-chat, enjoy the video.

Wow, a great interview w. Ms. Blasi. You have to listen closely because she gets way deep into content using everyday language…talking about sex and sensuality and corporate identification.
The highlight for me was when she said the “car has to speak the language of the people not the language of the product.”
I hope BMW rewards their lead designers with a production model of what they pored their ideas into creating.

Great design and great interview, much better way of explaining design ideas in words than Bangle’s non-sense. I wish she goes on designing the next upcoming BMWs, especially the next-gen 3 and 1 series.

Ms.Blasi designs with passion!Hands down this is the best “Out of the box” BMW design that I have seen in the last years. It is about time we had a design that does not require time to grow in us, nor polarizes people’s opinion. Bimmers have a personality and Ms.Blasi knows it. Credits to the interior design group also, bravo!

@Auday: I agree BMW would be crazy not to offer Ms.Blasi the design of the next generation 1, 3 and even 5 series!

I slightly disagree; I think you need both types of designers: the one’s, like Blasi who can perfectly summarize and make palatable the design trends that exist-
but on the other hand I’m sure you need the cutting edge creative minds (such as Anders Warming…her current boss at BMW who designed the original Z4) who push the envelope and advance what the visual language of BMW is.
That type of “new” that is groundbreaking inevitably provokes unsettling…”polarizing” responses, but it’s how design advances. Not in an orderly incremental development but rather in tectonic shifts that disrupt the past.

It’s interesting to see the ladder of power at BMW design…above Warming is Adrian van Hooydonk who is much like Blasi….who knows how to slightly massage a new design without breaking the mold. And above him is Chris Bangle who started the whole design revolution at BMW with complex concave and convex lines that sculpt the body into a more dynamic object.

These two types (and I’m simplifying the dichotomy of compliments and opposites) seem to successfully work off of one another in a way that has propelled BMW into the forefront of automobile design.

Excellent video! I agree 100% with Brookside

Is really cool to see two women leading the design of this new car (not very common in the car industry) -sorry for my english!-
