How can it be based on the 1-series? The 1 seems far too tall.

[...] According to the guys at BMWBlog, BMW is working on a hybrid-electric roadster to be called the Z2. Based on the 1-Series platform, the car would be a touch smaller than the up-coming Z4 and utilize the Efficient Dynamics technology displayed in the recent 7-Series hybrid. Odds are the company may pick a few lessons from their MINI-E plug-in as well, though no one’s handing out drive line details just yet. We like the idea of a hybrid that’s as fun to drive as it is good for the environment. Our only question is: when do we get to drive it? [Source: BMWBlog] [...]

Tom makes some great points.
Z2 makes sense. With the Z4 becoming larger, heavier (and more expensive) the Z2 has a chance to reclaim BMW's heritage of small and sporty automobiles.
Really good news.

I know BMW has taken lots of criticism for introducing too many models, but I wouldn't be totally against new, smaller platforms like the Z2. BMW just needs better focus. I think BMW could do well introducing lightweight, fuel-efficient, sporty cars. They can emphasize Efficient Dynamics/Brake Energy Regeneration, hybrids, diesels and 4 cylinder technology in variants of the 1-series, 2-series, X1, X2, Z1 and Z2. Keep the big HP/petrol cars in the 3, 5, 6 and 7 series. The smaller platforms would differentiate and prevent cannibalizing sales of higher models, and perhaps create a new, sensible market for fuel-conscious consumers.
