I drove the 335d that they had on the BMW Cancer Drive this summer and it was absolutely a phenomenal car! I really wanted the 335d in a Touring version a year and a half ago when I got my 335i Sedan, unfortunately it could not be had at that time. The biggest thing that disappoints me is the lack of a manual transmission, though it makes me feel a little better that it is not an option on the 335d in Europe also, though it is with the 330d. Regardless of the cost difference, it is one heck of a car and I very much welcome the new generation of diesel cars in the U.S.

2009 335i Gas base price $40100 plus Destination $825 PLUS Automatic Transmission $1325. ( Apples to Apples) = $42250

2009 335i Diesel Base price 43900 ( includes Automatic Transmission) plus Destination $825= 44725

$2475 Differance. IRS tax credit $900. All said and done $1575 differance. Look at it any way you want. This is what comes out of your pocket at the END.

$52025 includes $825 Destination. Base price is $51200 on diesel and 09 gas is $47100, both w/out destination.

Jwoz, where are you getting $4100 from?
The X5d is 52,025 and the X5i is 47,100, so that is $4925 diff.

I believe the $4100 is the diff between the x5d and x5i in Canada.
I am not sure the tax credit of $1,550 is valid in Canada?
What is that anyways, is it from the manufacture rebate credit or IRS thing?

Another advertising perk: diesels run forever. People loved the Mercedes 280 turbo diesel because you could easily get 500K miles out of that one engine without major overhaul. Think about what that means when you add all the added technology from that era!

335i D is about $2475 more then 335i considering you have a Automatic as standard equipment. Then a $900 tax break, so all said and done only $1575. Not a bad way to look at it.
The X5D is $4100 and a $1550 tax break, making it $2550 more then the gas X5. Really not to bad.

It does seem pricey, the X5 3.0i vs the 3.0d is about $5000!
Give that the diesel is 30% more efficient it will still take ~5yrs until you see the saving benefit at the pumps.
But I heard the new diesels engines are cleaner than the gas engines with a lot more torque and hold the resale value much better.
I been waiting a year for the X5d to come out.
It is also go that they have 0.9% financing on the 2009 335d and X5d. It should help in the sales, but I notice BMW Canada hasn’t introduced that yet on their 2009s, I guess they don’t want to sell as much as BMW USA…

@rcm3: The premium over the 335I vs. the 335d is $3200 and $1300 over the xi yeah, not cheap at all, but apparently, the diesel engine is really worth it. I will wait on the final decision until I drive one

That seems awfully expensive considering the base price of the 335i is over 4 grand less (which also seems expensive….).

@Horatiu B.: It's dropped below $2.00 for regular in parts of Georgia and South Carolina. It's actually $2.30 for premium where I am.
