This seems to be a popular question these days and I see more and more blogs or auto magazines talking about the CTS-V as being a strong competitor for the BMW M5 or for the MB E63 and Audi S6.
Josh, our editor, made a nice comparison a while back that covered some interesting angles. For example, the Cadillac CTS-V has a 6.2L Supercharged V8, packing 556hp at 6100 RPM and 551lb-ft of torque at 3800 RPM. For such a large engine, the CTS-V only weighs 4200/4300lbs, in manual and automatic transmission.
On the other hand, BMW’s super sedan, the M5, is powered by a naturally aspirated V10 that has 500hp at 7750 RPM and 383lb-ft of torque at 6100 RPM. The M5 is a bit lighter than the CTS, weighing 4012 lbs.
For fun, let’s throw in there the Audi S6 as well. The S6 features an all aluminium alloy 5,204 cc Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) 40-valve V10 petrol engine, derived from the Lamborghini Gallardo, re-tuned to produce 430 bhp at 6800 rpm and 400 ft·lbf of torque between 3000 – 4000 rpm. It utilises twin chain-driven double overhead camshafts (DOHC), and variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves. An impressive engine that delivers great performance. But all of this comes with a price: a total weight of 4,486 lbs.
Now before we go even further and you jumping all over me, I need to clarify one thing: YES, I know the S6 is not really the direct competitor to the aferomentioned super luxury sedans, but unfortunately, the more powerful and beautiful RS6 is not available in the U.S.
From a technical stand point, the Audi S6 seems to be the “little guy” in this game, but what if we focus a little bit now on the design aspect? Let me throw some photos at you and let you decide for yourself.
But before I end this short comparison, I would like to state my personal opinion. As much as I am bimmer fan, I was never 100% attracted to the overall design of an M5. But here is what I like:
- big fan of Audi’s front-end
- huge fan of the side stand an M5 has
- the M5 rear turns me on
- crazy about the Audi A6’s space ship interior
- I totally dig the aggressive look of a CTS-V
So, which one would you choose, without being biased of course?
