Would you choose a Cadillac CTS over a BMW M5?

This seems to be a popular question these days and I see more and more blogs or auto magazines talking about the CTS-V as being a strong competitor for the BMW M5 or for the MB E63 and Audi S6.

Josh, our editor, made a nice comparison a while back that covered some interesting angles. For example, the Cadillac CTS-V has a 6.2L Supercharged V8, packing 556hp at 6100 RPM and 551lb-ft of torque at 3800 RPM. For such a large engine, the CTS-V only weighs 4200/4300lbs, in manual and automatic transmission.

On the other hand, BMW’s super sedan, the M5, is powered by a naturally aspirated V10 that has 500hp at 7750 RPM and 383lb-ft of torque at 6100 RPM. The M5 is a bit lighter than the CTS, weighing 4012 lbs.

For fun, let’s throw in there the Audi S6 as well. The S6 features an all aluminium alloy 5,204 cc Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) 40-valve V10 petrol engine, derived from the Lamborghini Gallardo, re-tuned to produce 430 bhp at 6800 rpm and 400 ft·lbf of torque between 3000 – 4000 rpm. It utilises twin chain-driven double overhead camshafts (DOHC), and variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves. An impressive engine that delivers great performance. But all of this comes with a price: a total weight of 4,486 lbs.

Now before we go even further and you jumping all over me, I need to clarify one thing: YES, I know the S6 is not really the direct competitor to the aferomentioned super luxury sedans, but unfortunately, the more powerful and beautiful RS6 is not available in the U.S.

From a technical stand point, the Audi S6 seems to be the “little guy” in this game, but what if we focus a little bit now on the design aspect? Let me throw some photos at you and let you decide for yourself.

But before I end this short comparison, I would like to state my personal opinion. As much as I am bimmer fan, I was never 100% attracted to the overall design of an M5. But here is what I like:

  • big fan of Audi’s front-end
  • huge fan of the side stand an M5 has
  • the M5 rear turns me on
  • crazy about the Audi A6’s space ship interior
  • I totally dig the aggressive look of a CTS-V

So, which one would you choose, without being biased of course?

The Cadillac, like the exterior look and interior better. Beats the M5 and S6 for about $30000 less.

  3. d says:

I’m not sure about the 3rd, but the first 2 photos are not the s6!

NO, i hate American car manufacturers, as much as i hate Jap rice rockets.

  6. Adam says:

I’d say the CTS-V, better deal on a car that performs better than an M5. Plus, having been in the standard CTS, I know the interior is actually world-class (unlike some previous GM cars).

  7. Gil says:

    Ummmm no way.

  8. Art says:

CTS-V would be my pick.. $30k savings, great interior and tons of torque…
Even Clarkson,m American car hater said: One would be insane not to pick CTS-V.

  9. Gragop says:

I’m kind of on the fence – I’d have to drive both cars. I really do like the CTS-V, especially with a ludicrous V8 under the hood and a proper gearbox – it appeals as more of a driver-oriented car while the M5 come across as a more high-end luxo-sport-sedan. The CTS-V just seems to be all balls while the M5 is brains and some balls to boot.

  10. Gragop says:

Also – I’d leave out the S6 in this comparison. The RS6(though not US-bound for the C6 platform) is still Audi’s go-to Quattro GmbH car when it comes to the M5. The S6 seems more akin to the 550i despite the BMW being down 2 cylinders from the Audi.

Hell, if you’re dropping 85K on a car – you’ve got it good anyway so who cares?

  11. Kodey says:

NOOOO NEVERRR. let GM get all high and dry just wait New M5 be out soon V8 just like the Caddy and well they can wine all they want when the new one comes out ant well when i buy a high end car like that i want it to look nice not some stupid plastic interior that GM has on all there cars. BOOOO GM sucks, M5 over it any day not even a thought.

  12. Gragop says:

To be fair to GM, every thing I’ve seen and heard on the CTS interior is that it’s a tremendous step forward for GM and not all cheap plastics and poor-quality materials inside.

  13. Marc says:

Let me get this out of the way…I love BMW’s….but the New CTS-V is just beautiful. If GM continues its current trend I really think they will bounce back better financially than all of the other American manufacturers once the economy comes back into line. It just goes to prove that America CAN make new, exciting, “modern-looking” cars that will be near or just as good as the European brands….(then again the General has always been my fav. American brand….I mean they made KITT!!!!….LOL)

  14. d says:

Umm yeah..good fix, but the last photo isn’t the s6 in the end..

  15. Lance says:

M5, then Cad, then S6. But I must say, the M5 is the real king here. The other 2 look ugly. S6 is just plain boring and front ugly, just like all other Audi’s (VW). Audi’s S and RS is becoming just normal cars with a bigger engin and some body parts, what’s special? just money making. let’s give the Audi another round of complimentary list: Poor handling, Poor performance, poor quality, poor warranty and service, poor handling, poor……

  16. Speedoholic says:

Hand me the M5. CTS-V looks boxy and has too much chrome on it.

  17. L1ndja says:

    m5 and M5

  18. mpower says:

just look at the M5 with that meannnnn mug, the beast ! the cts looks like a plastic transformer

    MPOWER !

  19. Amr Maranello says:

I will choose THE ///M5 .. BMW is the Best in all , it will defendant will win 100% :D:D
try it in Circuit and u will figure it out ;)

  20. Zach says:

M5, Definitely. Can you even compare the CTS with anything that BMW makes??

  21. Marc says:

You guys sound just like fanboys…I guess there isnt anything wrong with that…but saying you can’t compare the CTS-V(not the CTS) is just narrow-minded and elitist. If you DON’T compare then why should BMW or anyone else make anything better?

  22. Horatiu B. says:

@Marc: Not really Marc, read the above comments, many people said they’ll take the CTS-V

  23. Marc says:

@Horatiu B.: It was directed at the a few of the posts after my initial post that said somethings that dont hold water…for example: “try it in Circuit and u will figure it out ;)”…..Didnt the CTS-V beat the M5 on Nurburgring? That is a “circuit”. “the cts looks like a plastic transformer “…kidding me right? “Can you even compare the CTS with anything that BMW makes??
NO.” The point is, you CAN and people WILL….that, in and of itself, is a GOOD thing…It will make BMW to continue to step their game up and come up with better and better vehicles….

  24. HyeRacer says:

    ///M5 All THE WAY

  25. Joe Bimmerfest says:

CTS headroom is horrible. Tall guys can’t fit in it as well as the M5. Trust me I know from personal experience.

  26. Horatiu B. says:

@Joe Bimmerfest: How tall are you? I’m 6″2 and I agree, it’s a little tight in the M5

  27. kc says:

    m5 all the way yo

  28. DDDave says:

Does anyone on this blog even own one of these cars, or is everyone just talking in theory???

  29. Horatiu B. says:

@DDDave: Well, I own a 335i, drove M5’s many times, but very seldom the CTS.

  30. 365Motorwerks says:

I have always loved the fact that the M5 is somewhat of a lux-sleeper with a beast underneath. The CTS-V has been sounding like a great ride and alot of fun but the look is to pointy and in your face for me. As for the price point it’s great (CTS) but power + price ratio loose out to overall package and styling of the M5 to me.

  31. Thula740 says:

    HELL NO!!!
Bimmer for me anyday, S6 is an overgrown A4, and CTS-V OR or Z, whatever, is a 1987 Nissan Sunny brought back to life. Please, Bimmer M5 has the standard here, wait until the new one comes!!!

  32. haziqdaF1fanatic says:

    Look…for me,as a bimmer fanz!!

Among all of these three beast…i’ll picked the M5….

Coz,M5 has a better performance, handling even more precise, interior is good,……..There’s many more to explain..but…M5 is way ahead of audi and cadillac…

    That’s all……
