The folks at Bimmerfile, got their hands on an Youtube video showing the new iDrive playing DVD movies. The video playback has been restricted on the previous iDrive generation, but apparently, BMW has listened to its buyers and implemented this feature.
Of course, due to safety regulations, the navigation system will play videos only when the car is in “Park” mode and the hand brake is on. I’m not sure how it will work for the manual cars, but I’m assuming the car will still need to to have the hand break on along with the car being placed in neutral and brakes pressed.
The video was taken in a 2009 BMW M3

It’s too bad about safety, there’s a lot of good and/or ironic movies you could watch while driving.
@Clara: Not a good idea, it’s enough that we have people texting, shaving and eating while driving, watching movies would be the icing on the cake.
My 2008 X5 with Premium Sound (giving it a DVD changer in the glove compartment) plays DVD video on my Nav screen if I’m in “Park”. As soon as I shift into “Drive”, it continues sound playback, but no video. The thought behind this is having the ability to still play DVD music or concerts in your vehicle while in motion. Also, the DVD video playback is great for anyone who uses “Park and Wait” at the airport while waiting for a passenger on an arriving flight.
Does the iDrive video display have a video input for a rear view camera for backing up?
