There is no doubt anymore, the BMW Z2 is real and it will be released by BMW sometimes around 2012. The Z2 will be based on the 1 Series Coupe design and it will cover the entry-level sports roadster market. This move will obviously push the new designed BMW Z4 up a class and it will allow for the entry-level roadster to be priced more accurately to the market demand, and even attract a new crowd.
As we have reported before, by using a similar platform as the current 1 Series, BMW is looking to design a light but fast roadster, soft-top of course, in order to reduce the weight and pricing. The entry-level model(most likely for Europe) might be powered by 120 horsepower, while the higher end model, will feature a turbocharged engine with 211 ponies. If built, the BMW Z2 will most likely use the four cylinder enginesdeveloped together with the French company PSA. But we all know that it’s still too early to speculate on the engines, so who knows…we might even see the quad-turbo four cylinder in there.
Now, here is what I have new for you today. The friends at GlobalMotors.net , through a very talented artist, Andreas Conradt, put together some pretty damn cool renderings of the BMW Z2 and let me tell you, if the roadster will look like this, they have a new customer for sure.
I showed this computer generated images to one of my friends at BMW and without divulging too much, he confirmed that the artist is DEFINETELY on the right track.
So, do you dig it?
That’s it for now, we’ll be back soon with more exclusive news. But in the mean time, if you would like us to keep you updated on all the BMW news, please take a moment and sign up for our email feed. Get updates by email

Good-looking car, but I really don’t see the need for another small roadster. The Z4 is already pretty compact as it is.
@Lee: To get the market of Mazda Miata and the other roadsters in that class.
In addition I think that such a car ( a compact lightweight roadster with lightweight engines would increase the fun factor, the symbiosis with man and machine and in addition reduce fuel consumption) This would be a perfect example of the BMW’s philosophy. Sheer Driving Pleasure and Efficient Dynamics.
Very nice photoshop.
I love this…the Z2 would fill in the gap that the new Z4 leaves behind as it goes upscale and high $ (that folding roof is going to come with a higher price).
The 1-series is such a wonderful car- it only makes sense to use its platform and mechanicals to spin-off variations.
Nicest ps job I’ve seen in a long time! Well done… who ever did it!!
@Horatiu B.:
I don’t foresee that happening, but maybe that’s just me.
I really wish BMW would stop going after the Japanese… I see no good coming from that. It starts with the Miata and S2000, then the Civic? Maybe the Yaris?
Nice photoshops! It’s a nice rendering in that it incorporates a lot of relevant styling elements. (even a bit of Cayman in the rear haunches?) But the top half of each door seems too busy to me: two arcing lines criss-crossing, another line right below it, and a mirror stuck right in the middle of everything.
It’s not bad, I like it.
However, KEEP IT A LIGHT CAR! Otherwise it will be a supposed small car that weights 3,400lbs or so. Like the 1 Series.
If BMW goes after every Jap car manf, and every segment, then by 2017 they will turn into an every day sort of car company instead of the image they portray of being a “luxury” brand.
I aggree with Patrick, great looking car but just a little too busy in the middle. If they kept the weight down with a fast engine, it would be awesome

To those concerned it will be too cheap for a luxury brand: That same concern that was present before 1 Series pricing was announced. I’m sure the price differential between this and the Z4 will be similar to the difference between the 1 and 3.
