Comments on: Review: BMW 8 Series

I disagree on the maintenance and repair costs. I have and had several 8’s incl the csi and cost of keeping it up isn’t any higher then the rest of the BMW’s. None of the items are hard to find and impossible to get. Plenty of used parts also available if you don’t fancy a new one (like the door handle issue) and reliability is actually pretty good. Some people might have got into a run down car or not maintained car or just plain a lemon, but its not worse then any of the BMW’s.
I know for some it means its still a money-pit compare to a Toyota, but at least our gas pedal won’t be stuck and won’t need a dumb cop to pull in front of us to stop. Also I’d like to think that majority of the 8 series owners are at least enough intelligent that a car can be put into neutral and by using a brakes then, it will stop. Obviously only dumb people bought Toyota’s as none of the victims had enough brain to figure this one out.

Oh man, I love the E31. In fact it was the car that got me into BMW in the first place (I’m 19)…as a little kid I had an E31 in my collection of Hot Wheels cars, in my favorite color too (dark blue). Just loved the looks of it even though I had no idea what it was, being five years old. Of course I was attracted to Bimmers again, specifically 80s/90s ones, when I got older and started looking for cars…and now I’m looking to get an E24. But it all started with that little 8 Series. It’s gotta be my favorite car of the 90s…

You and me both. I’ve always been a fan of GT cars, and the 8 is one of my all-time favorites. It’s just a shame that they’re such maintenance whores. I would love to own one myself, but I can’t justify dropping that kind of coin to keep a 10+ year old ~$20-30k car on the road. There has to come a point where a vehicle is just no longer worth the money you’re sinking into it… that’s why I no longer have my e46 M3.

Small price to pay, compared to how much you’re likely to spend to keep it on the road. One of my bosses has a 1996 840ci. It typically spends at least a week (often two) per month taking up one of our lifts. It doesn’t help that parts aren’t easy to get ahold of, either. This month was due to a door handle issue. Still took a week to source the parts so we could get it gone from the shop. Last month was $2314.19 worth of misc suspension parts (wholesale cost on parts, no labor) and cooling system repair.

This is a car that we’ve had for about 3.5 years, so it’s not like we just got hit with a poorly maintained car and tried to fix all the issues at once. We currently have $20,293.81 worth of tickets on that one car, all parts at our cost with no labor.

Great cars to look at; fun cars to drive. I don’t have a bank account that can support one, though.

Yeah – I actually feel similarly about a new 8 Series. It would be interesting but I’d rather see the 8 stay in BMW’s history books versus a new iteration. I won’t mind seeing a new, dedicated GT or 4 door GT like the CS Concept. Apparently that’s likely the way it would go though.

What’s particularly amusing is that the “previously cared for” market for the 850CSi is actually inching UPWARDS. ‘Bimmer’ magazine has ‘market updates’, and one of them was the E31. These cars can still be had for around $30-$40,000, the 850CSi commanding around $50,000.

This is my favorite model and I don’t look forward to seeing how BMW management will ruin it.

Yeah, it was a fantastic car – the 850CSi was cut down due to emissions regulations and the M8 prototype was never fully realized which is a shame as I feel that now, that car would be legendary had it been produced.

beautiful car.. been a fan of the 8 series since i was a kid.. maybe it is one of the reason i love bmw so much…

i just wish they bring it back to life!! the m1 and 8 series are very special cars and they really deserve to be brought back to life :(

Its time bmw revive it .. what are they waiting for i dont understaind mercedes has over 5cars with over 600hp ffs when i look at that i really get angerd that the fastest bmw has only 500hp that gets me sick lol..
