The US cannot get enough of SUV/SAV's. Even with higher gas prices, we still buy sport utes, but we want them to be smaller and more fuel efficient. I went from a Jeep Grand Cherokee to an X3 and would never look back. I love that I can have a car to haul my "junk" and my dog with a BMW badge on the butt of it. I cannot do everything I need to in life in a 3 series. I do question though, how many times can they cut this segment. X1, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7? Will the X1 "coupe" be an X-Drive0.5?

@dmlgc:

The 911 has had the same basic design and principles for the last 45ish years and it still works. It's grown in size and weight, yes, but they aren't building some sort of 911/SUV monstrosity off of it. And don't say the Cayenne because that's just a rebadged Touareg - not platformed off of another Porsche design.

BMW is following GMs steps...yea, keep going. It really makes a lot of sense to create 6 different models for an SUV market.

@Jeff: No Jeff, only the X7 was canceled, the X4 is still on from what I heard also. Now, it all depends on the economy, of course, so we'll see if it's delayed or not. I did hear that we should see a concept early next year.

Palbay must be smoking something. There is 0.0% chance that an x4 will be greenlighted, developed, and released by 2010, even as a 2011 model. Absolutely no chance. Furthermore, Car Magazine's sources claim BMW has axed both X4 and X7 lines. I'd love the option of buying an X4, but at this point, even the possibility of getting my hands on an X1 by 2010 are in doubt. This is just bunk.
