BMW releases teaser video of the BMW X1

With less than a month away from the official unveiling at the Paris Auto Show, BMW decided to release a teaser video on the its own bmw-web.tv website.

What we know so far is that the BMW X1 will be first launched in the European market and it will be available not just in four wheel drive, but also as a rear wheel drive.

Also the four and six cylinder engines will be available in both diesel and petrol, but expect to see the four cylinder turbo petrol in there too.

The X1 will most likely not be a downsized X3, but it will rather be placed somewhere between a 3 Series Wagon and a the X3, with pricing being set between these two models.

that ad was horrible.

“wait, wait, wait! Is this video implying that the new BMW X1 will be an urban SUV for my interesting, trendy lifestyle?! I’m excited!…excuse me X-cited!”

Sorry - but the new Z4 can’t get revealed fast enough…BMW’s glut of new SUVs and city car news is making me very cynical.

For a company that’s as media and image savvy as BMW this video promo traffics in yesterday’s vision of hip-urban culture. Graffiti?!!

If they’re trying to equate the X1 with the new, they should get some people who are actually young to make these spots.

Really, this is awful.

A few things.

1) it’s yellow. look at the last few seconds of the video (about :35-:36 seconds in) when the sheet is pulled up. Amazing grey wheels. Very nice running boards. And very very clean look.

2) the colors of the video being focused on yellow black and grey graffiti. that is not by accident. bmw is very deliberate. i don’t mind the graffiti either, it’s not uncool as everyone is suggesting.

also, i’m not so sure about this whole “it’s not as big as an x3″ thing, suggesting it slots between a 1 series and a 3 series wagon. That implies somehow that the ride height is low. This sucker is tall. The scale of a person standing to the rear of the vehicle suggests this is every bit as tall as a RAV4. Almost certainly, BMW is targeting the Acura RDX and Infiniti EX35. What should be interesting is to see if this is the same height or taller than the EX35, given that the Infiniti is certainly lower.

Keep digging up the X1 news Horatiu! This car is much much cooler than enthusiasts are predicting. Americans want higher ride height, 4wd, and a hatchback trunk for hauling random stuff. BMW has simply packaged it now into something that is funky and appealing to a younger crowd (or those who want to be perceived as young…middle aged women cough cough). This will sell very well in the suburbs.

The models allowing BMW to be profitable and give us the //M cars are the ones with mass market appeal…X models in particular. I would think it irresponsible if BMW sat on the sidelines and missed out on this movement.

If there’s anything that BMW has proven with the X6 it’s that they can magically inject the brand’s DNA into different segments. In economic times like we face, I’m glad BMW has diversified its lineup.

The X6 is more or less drivable like a BMW due to it’s trick suspension and software. That said, it’s the most pointless car ever built. Does anyone need something the size and weight of an SUV with a severe lack of utility and engine from a sport sedan/coupe? I didn’t think so.

These same models that are padding their profit margins are completely shredding BMW’s image - granted this is from an enthusiat’s stand point.

Was BMW strapped for cash in the early 2000’s when the X6, X3 and seven seater X5 weren’t around? Nope, they were on the up and up. My point being BMW can continue to make the types of models people expect of them and still turn a profit without dilluting the brand. Obviously, they’ve decided to go another route…burning the last 40 years of credibility on the way.

@Jeff: As far as I heard from BMW sources, it is planned to fit in the 3 wagon/X3 slot, and I just realized that I typed the wrong thing in the article, I will modify it now.

The X6 may not have the utility of an X5, but it certainly instills more confidence in me driving through a cold northeast snowstorm than a 335xi. I want drive height, I want a hatchback with fold flat seats, and I want individuality.

If BMW can make SUVs that drive like BMWs, than I think it’s on the enthusiast to accept the broader BMW community, and not thumb their nose.

don’t under estimate the power of adverts. There are lots of young rich professionals out there and most of them, including me would be interested in a car like this. Provided it is as economical (fuel wise and running costs) as the sedans and hatch. Obviously it has to be stylish and good looking like all other BMWs. I look forward to its launch. The ad just shows that it is an urban vehicle for someone who is young, energetic and outgoing - that’s me!

I have never liked Merc. It is a car for old people. Have you ever seen a young guy driving a Merc, even if you have once in a year, you must have thought that he lend it from his parents.

When I mean stylish, I mean sporty stylish as well. Not just elegance. And by the way, what makes you think that the X1 is not going to be sporty. All cars from BMW are sporty and the last time I checked, the BMW is the only company that’s able to make their 4X4 as sporty as their sedans, not audi, not merc, only BMW can do that.
