For the past weeks, BMW has been reinforcing the fact that the new iDrive Navigation System will not make its way into the 5 and 6 Series, but it will be available in the 1, 3 or 7 Series. Top level BMW executives confirmed that for now, no Car Infotainment Computer in the 5er and 6er.
But….yesterday, in a press release issued before the Paris Auto Show that starts next month, BMW dropped the bomb, but maybe it was a surprise just for us.
The new generation of BMW iDrive standing out in particular through the newly designed Controller including direct selection buttons, an optimised menu structure and innovative display technology, is being introduced in parallel both in the new BMW 7 Series and in the new BMW 3 Series, and is also featured as of autumn 2008 in the BMW 6 Series, the BMW 5 Series, and the BMW 1 Series.
The M5 Saloon, M5 Toruing, M6 Coupé and M6 Convertible also come as standard with the new generation of BMW iDrive. Extra safety, in turn, is offered on all four models by the new exterior mirrors covering an even larger area of vision. And last but not least, a new metallic color included in the range is Carbon Black.
I do remember seeing the online configurator for the 2009 models, and the new iDrive was definitely being featured there, but since it was never mentioned in the 09 ordering guides released by BMW, I figured that it was just an error.
Boy, was I wrong?!

Autumn 2008 runs through 21. December. In fact, Autumn has’t even started yet.
In addition, BMW has previously stated that the introduction of the CIC will vary by market.
@Jonathan Spira: That’s good news then.
My dealer just received my 2009 550i build was complete on it around 12 September. He sent me a few pictures and it surely looks like the newiDrive is on the center console. If I knew how to post a picture I would.
