I saw this too Sep 30th southbound on Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach. Driving home from work, I was along side it most of the time.

This mule seems to be popping up everywhere in LA- question is, why?
Why, when the production model will debut soon and there’ll be no need for the heavy rubber-suit cladding?
My best guess is that they are testing a US-only drivetrain and tweaking the last bits for the N/A model.

I spotted one of these today cruising southward along the I580 headed towards Fremont. We were stuck in traffic so I couldn’t grab a camera.

@Luckyman#9: Rule #1 for BMW fans, especially the ones in California: Always have a camera handy. If it’s not the Z4 showing skin, then you can at least spy Brittney or Paris.

I saw this same car about a week ago in LA near I-10 on robertson heading north. I had no camera at the time, so this is a trip to see it in pictures.

@Gragop: They give cars to test engineers, but as far as I know, you can’t take them to dinner lol it would be funny to valet a test mule LOL Especially this one http://www.bmwblog.com/2008/06/04/2009-bmw-3-series-facelift-new-exhaust/

Do they just give these test cars to employees to bang around in for a while for testing purposes? It’s gotta be weird just cruising to dinner or the mall in a testing-camo-clad bimmer!
