Since Audi has released their best-seller R8, the automakers world started to ask the other german competitors if they will come up with an R8 “killer”. While Mercedes-Benz decided to get in this game and work towards a car that will fit in the same class as the R8, the SLC Gullwing, BMW made several statements that no R8 competitor, from the Munich-based company, is in works.
In a recent interview with AutoTelegraaf, BMW’s Chief of Product Development, Klaus Draeger, was very straightforward when it comes to the R8. He basically stated that BMW has no need for such model and they should focus more on more environmental technologies, such as EfficientDynamics. (Video: What is EfficientDynamics?)
BMW is well known for not revealing many of their future plans, so we wouldn’t be surprised if such car is already in the design stage. A rumor inside BMW states that a Z8 model will be built along with a luxury four door sedan that will compete with high luxury brands, such as Bentley.
Do we need a BMW R8 killer? Some people will say yes, since the industry is changing and the competitors are looking for more ways to pull ahead, but in the same time, other agree that there is no need to “luxurize” the brand beyond the current levels.
