With less than two years left before the official launch date, the 2010 BMW 5 Series is being heavily tested these days. The 6th generation BMW 5 series, codenamed F10, as expected, will import some elements from the CS Concept and some of the main features include 8-speed auto with an AWD option available, Park Distance Control and an around-view monitor system.
The new model will also get bigger wheels, the standard size is 17 inch, wheel sizes 18 and 19 inch will be optional. Due to the wider track and lower height the all new styling of the new 5-Series will make it look almost like a coupe. Power comes from a large choice of 6 gas engines (ranging from 2.5 litre 218hp to 4.4 litre V8 twin-turbo 408hp) and four new generation of reduced-emission diesels (ranging from 2.0 litre 175hp to 3.0 litre 300hp).
The new car is expected to drop slightly in weight, despite a modest increase in size, thanks to the use of light-weight materials. The 5 will be loaded with all the electronic goodies, including new electronic damper and active yaw control systems.
I remember some of the first renderings back in 2007 that were posted by us and looking back at them, I come to realize that the graphic designers were quite off. While the headlights somewhat resemble the CS Concept and new 7 Series, the rear design is far off from the real deal.

1Kind of distracting when their is a nice M5 in the picture.

2OH, the size of those wheels!!!
Silhouette too looks very smooth and sporty.
As with the seven, we should be expecting some ‘getting-used-to’ aspects in the details - I think.

3Really looking forward to seeing more images of the next generation 5 Series as well as seeing what the next generation’s cars will have in regards to power……especially in the M versions….
Cheers,

4Giom:
I’m betting that the styling cues from the 7 series will work much better with the 5 series proportions. The 7 seems too stretched out, imo.

5@Mike:
I’ve got no problem with the sevens stretchyness - its a limo after all.
I also doubt that the five will reflect any of the sevens styling cues - except maybe the large kidney grill. BMW has, for a time now, been giving every model size its own identity.

6wow i hope they make the new 5 look better than it is,
in my opinion it is the ugliest BMW right now on the roads…followed by the 3 series sedan, although for 2009 they re-did the look of the 3 Sedan and it actually looks better, way better than before.

7Hopefully the tail end of the next 5 won’t look like a down-market Kia Rio. A BMW should not have candy lights. It’s not Japanese.
