@bsd107: I'm not sure what Operating System are these nav systems running, but it might not be too easy to implement more codes or..more important, to make sure they are stable.

Allowing ripping ONLY into 128kbit/sec WMA is not acceptable. We need support of lossless codecs in an expensive car like this.

Support for Apple Lossless, Windows Media Lossless (and possibly even FLAC) need to be added.

Hopefully this could be achieved in a software update.

Thanks for the clarification. No need to apologize – I wasn’t looking for that – I understand and very much appreciate that you try to get us early information, and things will change sometimes. Just wanted to know if everyone now was in agreement regarding the 3-series iDrive timing or if there was still some debate.

Do you expect the ordering guides to change with the new iDrive? That BMW UK pdf document referred to the current option “609 BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation System”, which is what the current option number is for BMW NA anyway (i.e. “609 Navigation system”). In theory they can just use the new iDrive without any modification to the 2009 Online Ordering Guide, can’t they?

@bsd107: yes, we stand corrected. at that time, BMW had no plans to release the iDrive version so fast, but based on the succesful feedback and testing, they decided that not only the 7 and 3, but the 1 series to get the same version. We will always admit if we're wrong and this time we were, based on our sources response. they have been right though so many times, and we stand by them. I apologize for any confusion and also, wanted to mention that the 3 series ordering guides are still showing the old idrive but we expect it to be updated soon, since the production is a little delayed this fall.

Horatiu B, please clarify: Does this info now obsolete your blog post back in April saying that the 3-series LCI would NOT get the new iDrive?

Do you now believe that the MY08 3-series sedan WILL get the new iDrive?

Cool!!! So it looks like we can actually press a button for things like Audio and Navigation without having to fool with the main knob…this will nice when one is blasting down the road…

Also, the improvements to the navigation system look to be quite impressive…
