This past week, I was in Zurich enjoying a little bit of time off and some german beer. Cruising on Zurich's streets, as expected, I kept seeing tons of exotic and luxury cars, anything from Maseratti, Ferarri to BMW and Mercedes, but what really caught my attention were the BMW 5 Series that were being used by the Swiss policemen.
I was a little bit affraid of taking photos of them and their 5 Series, but to my surprise, they were quite friendly and agreed to let me snap some photos for my "american fellows". I find it really interesting that the Switzerland spends that much money on a police car in compare to us here in the States, but seeing how small Switzerland really is, the general costs for the police equipement has to be significant lower.
Many luxury cars in Europe are debadged and these BMW 5 Series models made no exception, so I can't really tell what engine they had under the hood.
Anyway, I thought you would find this amusing and interesting in the same time

I don’t know exactly about the swiss police, but I guess most of them are 525d, at least that is what they are driving in Germany if they are driving the 5-series. There are many 320d around too. Maybe in Switzerland they spend some more money and have 530d as standard. There will be some more powerful petrol-cars too I guess. But since police-cars usually get a lot of kilometres while their daily driving most European police-cars are Diesel-powered.
very interesting. looks like i would actually start to “strive” to be a policeman there.
Wow awesome. cops there drive better cars than average Americans here. Where was this, are they hiring lol.
I am often in Lugano – in southern Switzerland. There they have a E91 325i as a police car. At least it was a six-cylinder and did not sound like a diesel. The 5 series they use in the Alps as well in the E61 530xd version. In the UK they have 5 series as well, the best I have seen so far was in Slovakia an Audi RS4 police pursuit car, in black. Obviously no fotos allowed. And in Italy they have a single Lambo Gallardo, used by the police for highway chases.
There are some (mostly) undercover Porsche 911 Turbo, patrolling German highways. I think they should start using BMW M5 as well.
From the double exhaust I think it is a 530 or maybe 535 and most likely it’s diesel.
