A few days ago, we have posted in article in which we proudly announced that the 2009 BMW 3 Series will get the new, update and improved iDrive system. The exciting news were posted on most of the major car blogs and at the time, and everyone got excited about it, including us.
Even though we knew that BMW usually keeps the goodies for their new, completely redesigned models, we thought that things might be different now.
Well, apparently, nothing has changed in the way BMW plans everything. Very well informed sources have shared with us that the new iDrive system will definitely NOT be in the 2009 BMW 3 Series facelift. The improved iDrive system will be part of the 5 Series and it is currently being tested in the 5 series mules.
Sorry to dissapoint you guys, but apparently we need to wait a little longer until we'll get to use the new system.
That's it for now, we'll be back soon with more exclusive news. But in the mean time, if you would like us to keep you updated on all the BMW news, please take a moment and sign up for our email feed. Get updates by email

BimmerFile has contradictory information, so it will be interesting to see who’s right! Personally I would love to see the updated iDrive rearing its head in the new facelift.
I’m not saying they’re wrong, but we trust our sources, they have been spot on many times and especially since they have seen the new iDrive in the 5 series already. There are some mules being driven around that have the new iDrive/interface, including a 3 series mule, but it will not be in the facelifted version. But, time will tell
Who cares about the I Drive. When are we getting the uprated engine?

It seems to be a confusion about all of this. The 5 series will get the new iDrive, along with the new 7. We only stated that BMW has a record of keeping the “goodies” for new cars. We’ll see next year if BMW decides to go ahead with the iDrive in the 3 or wait longer.

This iDrive IS in the new 3 series, from September 08 builds. I know this as i have just returned from my local BMW Garage having ordered the new facelitft model. The iDrive update is for 1,3 and 7 series. The 5 will be updated when the facelift i brought out soon.
@jon: Yes Jon, we are correct. We wrote a few articles recently that confirmed the existing of the new iDrive in the 3 Series. The 5 series will not get the iDrive until the new generation
… that is strange cause i just ordered a 335 sedan here in Greece and they guaranteed that the new I drive will be installed ….
@Tony: Tony, you’re fine, this was a rumor back in April, but BMW decided to include the new iDrive.
