Back in September 2007, the BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has announced that a new BMW model, X1, codenamed E84, will be available sometimes in 2009. Not many details have been provided at that time or any technical specifications of this new model. Of course, many rumors have been going around since then, including some interesting spy photos, but nobody could really confirm what engines the X1 will get or what slot they will fall into.
Well, sources inside the BMW Headquarters have told us that the BMW X1 will be definitely released in 2009. It will slot into the 1 series line up, but…it is built on a 3 series(E91) platform. The X1 will get the same engines as in the 3 series, starting with 2 diesels and 2 petrols.
Also, one of the most interesting things that came up in our conversation was that BMW will probably also be the starting testing point for a new 4 cylinder bi-turbo petrol, an engine probably designed for the European market.
And the BMW X1 will be available in both four and two wheel drive.
That's it for now, but stay tuned, more information on the X1 will be brought to you.
