Just a few days after BMW announced the expansion of its plant in Spartanburg, SC, Ernst Baumann, BMW's head of personnel, announced that 5,600 jobs in Germany will be cut by the end of the year. This is somehow expected due to our weak dollar in compare to the euro. I also predict that BMW will increase their prices this year on some of their popular models, such as the 3-series.
So far, BMW has laid off another 2,500 employee and the total lay offs represent 7.6-percent of BMW's workforce. The plan to increase the production on the U.S soil is a smart decision made by BMW, which is probably looking at lower costs than the plants found in Germany. The Spartaburg plant is already producing the BMW X6 and soon enough, the X3 production will be moving here as well.
According to BMW, the total number of vehicles manufactured in the U.S in 2007, reached 155,000, but with the introduction of new models, it's expected to reach 240,000 by 20212.
